2012 MLB Draft: UW Recruit Shaq Thompson Drafted in 18th Round By Boston Red Sox

For those University of Washington fans that were looking forward to seeing Shaq Thompson play college football for the Dwag Pound, you may see him in another uniform first as he was drafted in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox and plans to pursue a career in baseball, but also attended college and play football as well. Ambitious kid...

Per Bob Condotta on Twitter:

The 6-2, 225 pounder was taken as the 571st overall pick. He is hoping to play baseball this summer and then college football in the fall, so even if he gets drafted Washington is still in his plans.

Thompson hit .305 this spring for Grant High. His incredible athleticism translates into both sports as he was one of the top safety prospects in the contry as well. He told Condotta in February that he hopes both baseball and football could be in his future.

NCAA rules allow an athlete to play professionally in a different sport, meaning Thompson could still be a collegiate athlete playing football. However, if he signed with the Sox he would officially become a walk-on, meaning he would lose his scholarship.
