Washington Football Depth Chart: Huskies Name Starters For Matchup With Eastern Washington

The Washington Huskies football team has settled its depth chart for the season opener against Eastern Washington. But as is always the case with depth chart, there are more questions raised than answers.

The Washington Huskies have their fall depth chart ready for your viewing pleasure. Click the PDF here.

Here are some of the more interesting notes.

  • Washington looks like they could possibly start two true freshmen. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins is battling redshirt freshman Michael Hartvigson for the top spot, and John Timu has secured one of the outside linebacking spots.  Seferian-Jenkins was highly regarded, so it's no surprise that he's already up top, but Timu went under the radar, so his presence on the outside will be interesting to monitor.
  • Alameda Ta'amu and Danny Shelton provide one of the most imposing nose tackle one-two combos in all of college football this season. Expect a lot of defenses to struggle trying to run the ball up the middle on those two, particularly with Everrette Thompson in the three technique DT spot ready to clean up any messes.
  • Washington's offensive line is young, but they're all returning starters of some capacity, and they should be able to give Keith Price a better pocket than Jake Locker ever enjoyed. Look for the Huskies to provide running back Chris Polk with a lot better running room than he had last year.
  • Washington's biggest question marks are at outside linebacker with Timu and Princeton Fuimaono leading the way. This is a young unit that is trying to rack up sacks for a team that wasn't very good at getting outside pass rush. If Washington's defense is going to continue its upward trend with Nick Holt, they'll need to force quarterbacks out of the pocket and put them on the run.
  • The defensive ends are also a bit of a mystery--Talia Crichton and Hau'oli Jamora had decent campaigns, but they're a bit one-dimensional (Crichton is good in run support, Jamora in pass rush) and can be exploited with the right gameplan. Their development will be critical to Washington's success this season.
  • Washington still doesn't know who their starting punter is. This is a disaster waiting to happen.
