March Madness lived up to its name during the third round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament as upsets and wild finishes ruled the weekend. Both local teams find themselves outside the bracket after tough second round matchups. Gonzaga was the first to fall, losing to Jimmer Fredette and BYU on Saturday, . Washington put up a tremendous fight but last-minute gaffes doomed the Huskies as North Carolina advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with a win.
No. 11 seed Marquette continued its dream run through the bracket and into the Sweet Sixteen with a win over Syracuse on Sunday night. The Golden Eagles were joined in the round of 16 by fellow No. 11 seed VCU after the Rams knocked off Purdue, 94-76. Florida State made it three double-digit seeds to advance while ruining brackets with a 71-57 win over Notre Dame in the nightcap.
The No. 1 seeds all advanced on Sunday, but did it in vastly different ways. Duke had its hands full with Michigan, barely surviving to make it to the Sweet Sixteen with a 73-71 win over Michigan. Kansas let Illinois hang around for much of the game before putting the Illini away down the stretch in a 73-59 win. Ohio State had the easiest game, blowing out George Mason, 98-66.
The Pac-10 had one team survive the first weekend as Arizona barely got by Texas, 70-69. Derrick Williams came up with the late-game heroics, hitting a runner, drawing a foul and making what turned out to be the game-winning free throw after a Texas mistake on an inbounds pass.
