NCAA Bracket Update, Pitt Vs. Butler: Bulldogs Escape After Last-Second Foul, 71-70

We’re down a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament after Pittsburgh committed what may have been the dumbest foul in March Madness history. With 1.4 seconds to go, Shelvin Mack fouled Pitt’s Gilbert Brown, sending him to the line for two shots as the Panthers trailed by one. Brown calmly hit the first, but the drama was just beginning.

Brown missed the second shot and in the ensuing scramble under the hoop — with less than a second left, mind you — Nasir Robinson fouled Matt Howard, sending him to the line on the other end. There was absolutely no reason to foul as the worst Pitt could’ve done was overtime at that point. Instead, two controversial calls ended the game at the line as Howard hit one of two free throws to give Butler the 71-70 win.

Butler moves on to face either Wisconsin or Kansas State in the Sweet Sixteen. The rest of the Southeast region bracket is below and a full 2011 NCAA Tournament bracket can be found over at SB Nation.
