Quarterback Austin Lee from Sammamish HS helped his team win a thrilling 48-42 victory over league rivals Lake Washington this past Saturday. Lee broke out of the pocket for scoring runs of 80, 39, 34 and 7 yards in Saturday's effort. The senior leader will try to help his team compete in a tough KingCo conference going against the likes Bellevue and Mercer Island in the next three weeks.
Talk about your four touchdown performance in your team's win against Lake Washington. Was this the best game you've ever had?
I would say so. We have a lot of athletic backs in our backfield, so there is a lot for the defense to account for. The offensive line opend up holes all night so I was able to make some plays, it was a lot of fun.
Are you satisfied with your team's performance so far this season?
Not entirely. We lost a couple of games that we all felt we should have won. It's tough to be happy with games like that, but this team has had a huge turnaround in heart compared to the last few years' teams. So I am definitely happy with the way we've fought this season.
Tell me a little bit about your style of play. What are your biggest strengths at the quarterback position?
I would say speed, vision, and just desire. I'm a little undersized, but I love contact and love to play the game.
Is there a current or former NCAA/NFL player you try to emulate your game after?
That's a toss up. I love the way Peyton Hillis plays the game. He gets downhill fast and runs the ball with authority. But growing up in Seattle, I've always been a Jake Locker fan. I really think he's one of the toughest guys in the game, and he is very coachable.
What were your personal goals heading into the season?
I wanted to be named to the All State Team, and be in the top 10 for rushing in the state.
Do you play any other sports in high school?
I run track as well.
Events?
I do all the sprints, but the 400 Meter is my favorite.
You enjoy the pain?
I enjoy the guts that the race takes, it's a tough race. But a lot of it is mental, I've always liked it!
Do you plan on playing football at the next level?
Yes, I've always dreamed about playing college football!
How's your recruitment going?
Pretty well. It's been tough to narrow it down, but I'm keeping my options open and whatever happens, happens!
What schools are you currently considering?
Linfield, Willamette, University of Puget Soun, Pacific Lutheran University and a couple other DIII private schools. But I am hoping to get some looks from larger schools soon.
You'll wait until after the season to make your decision?
Yeah, for sure. Football will definitely not be the only factor in my decision, so I'll have to check out all my options.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
I don't usually consider myself too superstitious, but I eat the same kind of sandwich at the same time on every gameday.
What's the special sandwich?
Roast beef on whole wheat, QFC's finest.
Alright here are some quick hitters: Best movie sequel ever?
I'd have to go with all the Star Wars movies.
If the TV is on at 2 a.m., I'm watching ...
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Song no one knows I listen to...
Love Story by Taylor Swift
Any final shoutouts?
Just to all of my teammates, I love those guys! Also everyone from Saint Louise.
