The UCLA Bruins traveled to Tempe to battle the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday afternoon. After the Bruins jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, it was all Arizona State. The Sun Devils took a one point lead into the half before pulling away in the second half.
Arizona State outscored the Bruins 34-14 in the second half en route to a 55-34 victory. At one point, the Sun Devils scored 24 unanswered points in a period spanning parts of the third and fourth quarters.
In relief of injured starting quarterback Steven Threet, backup Brock Osweiler was outstanding, throwing for 380 yards and four touchdowns. Aaron Pflugrad caught two touchdowns on the day. Deantre Lewis had a game-high 105 yards on six catches. Cameron Marshall led the Devils on the ground with 147 yards and a touchdown.
Richard Brehaut had a breakout game in the passing game, throwing for 321 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. The dual-threat also added 18 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Johnathon Franklin picked-up 73 yards on 14 carries to lead the Bruins on the ground. Taylor Embree led the Bruins with 105 yards on nine catches.
UCLA fell to 4-7 with the loss and were eliminated from bowl contention. Arizona State improved to 5-6, setting up a date with Arizona next week with bowl eligibility on the line. The Bruins take on the USC Trojans with only bragging rights at stake next week.
