Osvaldo Alonso opened the scoring in the 50th minute and closed it in the 69th with a Fredy Montero brace bookending an Andy Rose goal in between to give the Sounders five goals in fewer than 20 minutes as the three-time defending US Open Cup champions cruised to victory over Cal FC. The amateur side, coached by US National Team legend Eric Wynalda, hung tight until Osvaldo Alonso converted a penalty in the 50th minute, but from there on out it was all Sounders, with Alonso capping things off with a tremendous half-volley to put the exclamation mark on the win for Seattle.
With the US Open Cup entering the quarterfinals the Sounders will now (most likely) travel to the Bay Area to take on the San Jose Earthquakes who defeated the NASL's Minnesota Stars 1-0 on Tuesday night. Current rumors suggest that the game will take place at San Francisco's Kezar stadium, but with the Sounders having expressed an interest in purchasing hosting rights the final venue has yet to be decided.
