Steve Zakuani Tribute May Be In The Works, Drew Carey Acknowledges

We all remember the Charlie Davies tribute from last season, which Drew Carey, part owner of the Seattle Sounders, was a big part of. In the ninth minute of the one of the Sounders matches shortly after Davies’ car accident, fans held up No. 9 placards in tribute to Davies. Almost immediately after Zakuani went down, fans took to Twitter in hopes of organizing a similar show of support for the injured Sounders winger.

While fans work to plan the event, tentatively set for next Saturday’s home game against Toronto FC, the Sounders ownership may get in on the action. Carey acknowledged the ideas floated already and hinted something may be in the works, perhaps with the full-support of the front office (h/t Sounder at Heart)

  1. cards for next #Sounders game in honor of Zakuani and his broken leg have been requested. Will keep you up to date. #forZakuani

Carey and the Sounders ownership group have been terrific when it comes to working with fans for events such as this, and I’d expect a Zakuani tribute to be no different. While no official word has been given, I’d expect to see plenty of No. 11 cards, perhaps 30,000-plus, on Saturday.

So let’s get the ball rolling. There’s nothing stopping fans and supporters groups from printing out cards and instructions to pass out to fans entering the game. With Zakuani down and out, the least we could do is continue to shower him with support and kind words.
