Lofa Tatupu, Seattle Seahawks Working To Restructure Contract, According To Report

In 2008, Lofa Tatupu agreed to a monster contract extension, inking a deal with the Seahawks that was set to keep him in Seattle until 2015. At the time, the deal made him one of the highest-paid linebackers in the NFL, and rewarded Tatupu for his performance on the field early in his career. But since signing the extension, Tatupu has disappointed, suffering through injuries and poor performance. It was only a matter of time before the Seahawks asked him to work out some kind of deal.

According to Jason LaCanfora, via Brian McIntyre, Tatupu and the Seahawks are in talks about restructuring his contract.

@JasonLaCanfora reports that #Seahawks & Lofa Tatupu meeting to discuss possible contract restructure.

All had been quiet on the Tatupu front heading into camp. According to early reports, Tatupu had missed the first day, with the reason being somewhat mysterious at the time. Speculation grew, with many wondering whether the Seahawks were preparing to cut or trade the veteran linebacker.

As we now know, the answer was neither. Instead, the Seahawks could ask Tatupu to take a pay-cut in exchange for making him a free agent sooner. Any restructuring would free up money for the Seahawks to continue their rebuilding process without having to work around a monster contract signed under the previous regime.
