The Seattle Seahawks received failing grades for the 2011 NFL Draft and landed on a few losers lists when the results were tallied. But while the national view of the Seahawks’ picks isn’t so good, Seattle fans aren’t so down on the draft. It’s not a spectacular draft haul by any means, but the Seahawks did fill needs and improve at a few of the positions they needed to. The full results and plan, however, won’t be known until the NFL lockout is settled and free agency can get underway.
Overall, Field Gulls’ Danny Kelly feels pretty good with the 2011 NFL Draft. Not great, but pretty good, he says.
But not great. Picked up a lot of solid players and the line will look a lot better. The secondary got some skill players as well. There’s still a lot of work to do though. I’d probably tentatively grade it at about a B- but really who cares? It will take us a couple years to see how this class pans out so in the meantime it will be fun to see what happens in free agency.
Kelly reviewed each of the picks, but has a good view of the draft as a whole. The fact of the matter is we just don’t know how well this draft turned out, and we likely won’t for a few years. Players many thought were reaches could be solid contributors for years for all we know.
So, perhaps, the grade is incomplete for now. It may not be exciting, but the players taken this year could provide a foundation to build off of, especially on the offensive line.
