WAC Expansion: Where Will The Football Schools Come From After Adding Seattle U?

Although the Western Athletic Conference did need to add members after being raided over the past year or so, inviting Seattle University doesn't quite solve their problems.

They're still looking to add football schools, as Karl Benson was quite clear about during yesterday's media teleconference.

The question, however, is where exactly these football schools will come from.

San Jose Mercury News reporter Jon Wilner provides some insight based on his sources.

WAC expansion: Seattle joins, more schools to follow | College Hotline
Based on conversations with sources, both before and after Tuesday’s announcement, the league has IDed the following football schools as potential expansion targets:

Louisiana Lafayette, North Texas, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Montana and Montana State.

As Wilner notes - and we've described in this storystream - Montana has already rejected the WAC, which makes that unlikely. But highlights of the rest of this list include Louisiana - Lafayette having a home-and-home with the Big 12's Oklahoma State over the last few years and North Texas having three of their first four games televised broadcast on ESPN3.com.

But as Wilner also says, these are just potential targets and another process of application, evaluation, and invitation will have to occur before any of that is settled.
