The Seattle Mariners are hoping to salvage their series with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday with a victory, turning to Jason Vargas to help them avoid the brooms at Safeco Field.
Vargas (14-9, 3.85) has been lights out at home as of late, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.87 ERA in his last six starts at Safeco. He held the Boston Red Sox to just one run on six hits in seven innings of work in his last outing, leading to a 4-1 win. Vargas is 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts against Oakland, giving up two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work against them back on June 26.
The A's will counter with rookie Tommy Milone (11-10, 3.94), who is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three career starts against Seattle. He allowed five runs on a season high-tying 10 hits in his last start against the Angels, lasting just three innings before being removed.
Seattle is 7-8 against Oakland this year, with one more series left between them this month.
First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT with coverage on ROOT Sports and 710 ESPN AM.
