Felix Hernandez conquered the Tampa Bay Rays with the first perfect game in Seattle Mariners history last Wednesday afternoon at Safeco Field, and for that he was named the American League Player of the Week for games from Aug. 13-19.
The right-hander from Venezuela cemented his status as Seattle's biggest sports star with the 23rd perfect game in Major League Baseball history. The 1-0 win was also the fourth no-hitter in Mariners history and second for the team this season.
Hernandez, 26, is only the second foreign-born pitcher to toss a perfect game. He's 11-5 and has won seven in a row, going 7-0 with a 1.58 ERA, four shutouts, 83 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 11 starts going back to June 23.
He has thrown three 1-0 shutouts this season alone. In recognition of his award, Hernandez receives a watch from Game Time. It's great to be the King right now.
