The closest the M's came to scoring was in the second inning, when Justin Smoak appeared to hit a home run over the top of the Pesky Pole in right field. The ball was called foul and after review, the call stood. Smoak then struck out to end the inning.
David Ortiz got the scoring started with a solo homer in the third inning off of starter Blake Beavan. The Red Sox win was academic after that, as the Mariners were limited to just four hits. Ichiro Suzuki had two of those four hits and stole two bases. All four Mariners hits were singles.
Beavan fell to 1-4 after allowing three runs in four innings on five hits and two wallks.
