Mariners Spring Training 2012: Chone Figgins Fills In For Franklin Gutierrez

Seattle Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez received an MRI on Tuesday due to a pectoral injury that he suffered at Spring Training. The Seattle Mariners have not released any information as of yet regarding the severity of the injury, but he did not participate in Wednesday's intrasquad game at the Mariners' training facility.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports that third baseman Chone Figgins filled in for Gutierrez in center field during today's Mariners vs. Mariners activity. Figgins put up another walk and a line drive single in the intrasquad game and is already getting plenty of looks at pitches in the leadoff role.

By all reports, Figgins is feeling and looking good so far at shortstop, third base and center field. It's great that he's already getting plenty of chances to display his versatility. Hopefully the confidence that manager Eric Wedge and the rest of the front office has in Figgins will lead to a career year.

But of course, it is far too early to start seriously thinking about these things. We will have to wait and see how things continue to go. But despite the injury to Gutierrez, there are still some positives to be found with the Mariners.
