The Sounders' goalkeeper shared some interesting details about his history with the club as he is set to make his first start in CONCACAF play.

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann will draw the start for the team against Marathon of Honduras in the CONCACAF Champions League tournament set to begin on Wednesday.

In a bizarre twist of events, Hehnemann's second stint with the club is actually his first with the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer. The Sounders were present in the 1996 CONCACAF Champions Cup event, and that event was split between 1996 and 1997. Hahnemann had left the squad when the team began play in '97, so for all intents and purposes, he has yet to represent them in that capacity and will make his debut.

His first stint with the Seattle Sounders of the A-League in the APSL was a successful one where he helped lead the team to two championships in 1995 and 1996, and a regular season best record in 1994. In the United States, however, promotion / regulation is shared and not shared, so that his time with the team does not count as time played in the MLS.

On Wednesday, Hahnemann will finally have his day as the starting keeper for the Sounders in CONCACAF play.

Seattle Sounders FC newly acquired goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann held court with area reporters after his first practice on Monday afternoon to discuss his reasons for returning back to Seattle.

Courtesy of Joshua Mayers stellar transcribing skills, the goalkeeper spoke with the media for 16 minutes on a large variety of topics.

Hahnemann was a former A-League Sounder way back in the day of his 18-year-long professional career. Because he is a former national league player he is treated to the allocation process by the MLS, something he expressed frustration about.

The whole allocation was designed to make the league fair and all that stuff, but then you can sign anybody from any other national team and they don't have to go through the same sort of process. It's a little bit frustrating. Last year, funny enough, Montreal had the allocation pick, so if I had signed with the league, because I'm a U.S. national-team player, I would have ended up in Canada. (laughs) That makes sense. That makes sense to me. Go to Canada.

The move to the Sounders is likely the last chapter of Hahnemann's professional soccer career. The goalkeeper is 40-years-old and hasn't played in a professional game since 2011, and for all intents and purposes was pretty much retired. But the playing bug kept biting and Hahnemann jumped back in.

Of course I want to play. I'm not coming here just to make numbers and to come into training -- that's not why I'm a goalkeeper. I can tell you it's not the money that Adrian's paying me. (laughs) I can tell you that for a fact. That's not why I came out here. Adrian did tell me he was a little bit embarrassed in what he was offering and I go, 'Whatever's fine. It doesn't matter. I just want to come out and whatever it is, it's more than I was making two minutes ago.'

Goalkeepers tend to have a longer life span than most professional athletes, but Hahnemann will be 41 at the start of next season. With the Sounders firmly entrenched with Michael Gspurning at goal, a backup role with the team very well could be the swan song for the EPL veteran. He isn't looking at it as a two month trial - but a test to see how it all goes until next year rolls around.

I hope to be around next year. We'll see how the old legs and everything goes through. I felt pretty good today, then (Babayele Sodade) was smashing goals past me at the end of training, so maybe not so good. But that's one of those things. You just keep going and we'll see where it takes us.

Sounders acquire Seattle Pacific University grad and former US National Team keeper on final day before roster freeze.

Finally bringing to an end a rumor that has persisted so long that it's become something of an inside joke among the team's fans, the Seattle Sounders have reportedly agreed to terms with Seattle native and former A-League Sounder Marcus Hahnemann on a one-year contract with a second-year option. As Hahnemann is a former national-team player he re-entry into MLS was subject to the allocation process, meaning that Seattle most likely traded something of minimal value to move up in the allocation order in order to pick up Hahnemann's rights. Unless paperwork has been filed with the league office without word leaking out elsewhere, this looks to be Seattle's final move before the "roster freeze" tomorrow.

In an 18 year professional career, Hahnemann has spent time with the Sounders and Colorado Rapids in the US, as well as English clubs Fulham, Rochdale, Reading, Wolverhampton and Everton. Hahnemann has also made 9 appearances for the US National Team and has been regularly selected as a backup to Kasey Keller and Tim Howard.

Hahnemann was widely rumored to be the likely replacement for former Sounders captain Kasey Keller, but that speculation came to an end with the signing of current first-choice keeper Michael Gspurning. This move seemingly came out of nowhere, but it will give the Sounders some experience and added insurance behind Gspurning heading into the playoffs. It will also serve as a homecoming for Sounders legend Hahnemann, as what is likely the final contract of his career will bring his time as a professional full-circle.

UPDATE: The Sounders acquired Toronto FC's first spot in the MLS allocation order in exchange for a conditional draft pick.
