The Washington State Cougars defeated the UNLV Rebels on Friday night, and one of the things to come out of the game has been a renewal of the debate over who should be playing quarterback, Connor Halliday or Jeff Tuel. With Tuel nursing a knee injury, redshirt freshman Halliday started against UNLV and went 26-for-45 for 378 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

What does this mean for Cougar football? SB Nation Washington State blog Coug Center weighs in, stressing that it may be best for the program for there to be no debate at all:

Here's the thing: It doesn't matter. What Washington State has is two capable quarterbacks with different enough skill-sets. Tuel can run and has a wisdom about him that keeps mistakes at a fairly low level. Halliday has a cannon and can fit balls into small spaces. Both have their issues and both have their upsides, but each is capable of taking the reigns.

The Washington State Cougars (2-1) held on for a 35-27 win against UNLV (0-3) Friday, the second straight week WSU survived a last second hail mary attempt.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but UNLV was able to move the ball against the Cougar defense, leading to a 28-20 WSU halftime lead. The defenses rebounded in the second half with neither team scoring in the third quarter.

WSU went ahead 35-20 early in the fourth quarter and appeared to be in control, but UNLV kept clawing back. The Rebels scored with 1:44 to play making it 35-27. WSU appeared to have the game won, but an incomplete pass stopped the clock and gave the Rebels one final chance. The Cougars survived when UNLV's final pass fell incomplete as time expired.

Connor Halliday started at quarterback for WSU and had his moments. Halliday threw two interceptions, but also completed 26-of-44 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. Marquess Wilson had his first 100-yard game of the season, catching five passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Gabe Marks also went over the 100-yard mark with 126 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, WSU wraps up its non-conference schedule at 2-1. They will begin Pac-12 play next Saturday against Colorado.

Box Score Hero: Marks led the Cougars in receiving and scored his first career collegiate touchdown. He also made the first big play of the game, with his 52-yard reception setting up WSU's first touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications: Washington State and UNLV came in far off the national ranking radar and no part of Friday's game inspired any confidence to change that.

But Did They Cover? UNLV's late touchdown pulled them within eight points, meaning WSU failed to cover the 8.5 point spread.

Connor Halliday went 6-for-15 on his passes in the quarter, throwing for 84 yards and two touchdowns. The over/under for this game is set at 55.5 after starting the week at 54.

Heading into their matchup with the UNLV Rebels this Friday, Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel's knee injury suffered last week will be a key factor in the success of the Cougars tonight down in Vegas.

Kyle Rancourt over at Coug Center explains how important Tuel's health will be, because a QB controversy could boil over if he has a bad game, and backup Connor Halliday could step in nicely if need be.

If Tuel's knee is good to go, he should statistically have a very good game against a bad Rebels defense. Heck, last year Marshall Lobbastael threw for 361 yards and 5 TDs. If Tuel's knee isn't 100%, I'd expect Halliday to step up and have a good game, as well. For the sake of my sanity, however, I hope Tuel throws for 600 yards and 6 TDs.

I think most Coug fans would agree with that last statement. Tuel was 20-26 for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns against Eastern Washington last week.

The Rebels and Cougars get it on Friday night at 6 p.m. PT from Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Washington State Cougars will look to make it two wins in a row with a victory over the UNLV Rebels in a Friday night game in Las Vegas.

The Cougars are 1-1 on the season, after dropping a Week 1 game against BYU and eeking out a victory over Division 1-AA opponent Eastern Washington last Saturday.
Bucannon hit Eastern Washington Eagles wide receiver Greg Herd late and high as he came across the middle on an overthrown pass and was penalized for on the field for the hit. After further video review by the NCAA -- a required action for all defenseless-opponent penalties that do not result in immediate disqualification -- the Pac-12 handed down the half-game suspension.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott spoke on the ruling:

"While Mr. Bucannon was penalized on the field, I have deemed it necessary to add a half-game suspension," said Scott. "This disciplinary action was part of our weekly review of all targeting and unnecessary roughness hits." "In order to appropriately protect our student-athletes, it is imperative that we monitor and when needed, act in situations where a blow to the head of a defenseless player was flagrant and/or unwarranted, especially in situations where the hit occurred well after the play was over" added Scott.
