The Seattle Mariners were hoping to take advantage of a freshly-swept Oakland Athletics this weekend, but ended up being swept at home by them instead. Sunday afternoon's 4-2 loss sealed the deal for the A's.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Jonny Gomes hit a big home run off of starter Jason Vargas. The three-run shot put Oakland on top and proved to be the difference in the game.

The Mariners got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI triple from Michael Saunders. In the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Seager led off with a home run to cut the Oakland lead to 3-2, but that would prove to be the last gasp for the M's.

Josh Donaldson led off the ninth inning with another home run that put the game firmly out of reach.

The Seattle Mariners are hoping to salvage their series with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday with a victory, turning to Jason Vargas to help them avoid the brooms at Safeco Field.

Vargas (14-9, 3.85) has been lights out at home as of late, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.87 ERA in his last six starts at Safeco. He held the Boston Red Sox to just one run on six hits in seven innings of work in his last outing, leading to a 4-1 win. Vargas is 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts against Oakland, giving up two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work against them back on June 26.

The A's will counter with rookie Tommy Milone (11-10, 3.94), who is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three career starts against Seattle. He allowed five runs on a season high-tying 10 hits in his last start against the Angels, lasting just three innings before being removed.

Seattle is 7-8 against Oakland this year, with one more series left between them this month.

First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT with coverage on ROOT Sports and 710 ESPN AM.

The Seattle Mariners looked lost again on Saturday night. For the second straight night, they lost to the Oakland Athletics by a final score of 6-1.

The A's got on the board first when Josh Reddick scored on a fielding error in the top of the first inning. The Mariners tied things up in the bottom of the second when Trayvon Robinson managed an RBI groundout. Unfortunately, the M's were unable to get any more runs across against Brett Anderson.

Oakland put together a big four-run fourth inning against Hisashi Iwakuma, scoring on a Stephen Drew single, a home run from George Kottaras and an RBI double from Coco Crisp. Iwakuma lasted just 3.2 innings and had his worst start since entering the rotation. Yoenis Cespedes hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to make it 6-1.

The Mariners will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday.

The Seattle Mariners fell short in Game 1 against the Oakland Athletics despite sending ace Felix Hernandez to the mound. They'll look for a different result in Saturday's game behind Hisashi Iwakuma (6-3, 3.14 ERA).

Iwakuma has been on a hot streak recently, going 3-0 in his last four starts and posting a 0.35 ERA. In his last outing, he struck out seven Angels in 7 1/3 scoreless innings against Los Angeles. The Mariners will need a strong performance from Iwakuma against Brett Anderson (3-0, 0.90 ERA), who takes the hill for the Athletics. Anderson is 4-1 with a 0.96 ERA ins his last seven starts against the Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners had to feel good about their chances on Friday, as Felix Hernandez took the hill against the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field. The A's were coming off being swept at home, but they rebounded with ease in Seattle, roughing up King Felix in a 6-1 Mariners loss.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-out RBI single in the first inning to get the scoring started. The Mariners answered back in the bottom of the second inning, as Brendan Ryan made it 1-1 with a two-out RBI single of his own. Unfortunately, that would be the last run Seattle would score.

George Kottaras delivered the big blow with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to give Oakland a 4-1 lead. Oakland tacked on two more runs in the fifth thanks to RBI hits from Josh Donaldson and Stephen Drew.

The A's scored all six of their runs (five earned) off of Hernandez, who lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up 11 hits and a walk. The Mariners were held to seven hits in the game, all singles.

Fresh off an uplifting series against the Boston Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners host the Oakland A's at Safeco Friday night, hoping that Felix Hernandez can pick up where he left off.

Hernandez (13-6, 2.51 ERA) suffered his first defeat since June 12 in his last start. He gave up five runs over 7.1 innings in a 5-2 loss to the Angels. Nevertheless, King Felix is still the owner of the majors' lowest ERA, posting a 9-0 record with a 1.40 ERA over his last 14 starts.

The A's will send out rookie A.J. Griffin (4-0, 2.26), who has been outstanding so far with Oakland. He became the first pitcher in Oakland history to begin 4-0 as a starter, sending down the first 14 batters he faced in his last start en route to a 7-1 victory over Boston.
