The Seattle Mariners were able to successfully avoid the sweep on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field. The Mariners were able to return the favor and defeat the Angels ace pitcher by a final score of 2-1.

Jesus Montero broke through for the Mariners with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The blast improved Montero's all-time record against Jered Weaver to 4-for-8, with all four hits being home runs. Carlos Peguero added a solo home run in the fifth inning, also off of Weaver, which would end up being the difference in the game.

The Angels finally got on the board in the top of the ninth inning, as Howie Kendrick drove in Vernon Wells with a two-out single off of Tom Wilhelmsen. The Mariners closer was able to hang in there and pick up the third out for the save.

Hisashi Iwakuma outdueled the Angels once again, turning in 7.1 scoreless innings of five-hit baseball, walking none and striking out seven.

After taking the loss in the first two games of the series, the Seattle Mariners are looking to close out their set with the Los Angeles Angels on a high note at Safeco Field.

Reliever Hisashi Iwakuma (5-3, 3.40) has been getting more comfortable since moving to the rotation in early July, posting a 4-1 record with a 1.99 ERA in his last eight starts, including tossing six scoreless in his last outing against the Twins. Iwakuma had a nice showing last time against the Angels, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings pitched en route to a 7-4 win on August 11.

The Halos will counter with ace Jered Weaver (16-3, 2.85 ERA), who is struggling a bit as of late with a 1-2 record and a 6.75 ERA over his last four starts. He's been successful against the M's though, posting a 6-1 with a 1.07 ERA over his last ten starts until a 4-1 home loss to them on Aug. 12.

First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. PT with coverage on Fox Northwest and 710 ESPN.

The Seattle Mariners were hoping to even up their home series against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. Unfortunately, even with Felix Hernandez on the mound, the M's came up short in a 5-2 loss.

Albert Pujols doubled home Torii Hunter in the first inning, giving the Angels an early edge. The Mariners tied things up in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run from Trayvon Robinson. Later in the third, Franklin Gutierrez hit an RBI double that put Seattle on top, 2-1.

King Felix held the score there until the top of the eighth inning, which proved to be his undoing. Pujols reached on a fielding error that also allowed Mike Trout to score to tie the game and left runners on second and third with no outs. Mark Trumbo followed up with a single that drove in both runners to make it 4-2 Angels and knocked Hernandez out of the game. Howie Kendrick drove in Trumbo with a double for a big insurance run.

If the city of Seattle did not already love Felix Hernandez at the start of this season, they sure do now. The toast of the town the past few weeks since throwing a perfect game against the Rays, King Felix has become an icon for the Mariners and has been a key part of the team turning their season around.

On Saturday night with the Angels in town, Hernandez will take the mound for the M's at Safeco Field. He is 13-5 this season with a 2.43 ERA. And while those numbers are impressive, his last three starts have been even better: during his last 25.2 innings of work, the King is 3-0 with a 0.35 ERA and 22 strikeouts. Those are video game numbers.

The Angels will start righty Ervin Santana. He has not pitched well this season, entering with a 7-11 record and 5.45 ERA. Despite his recent struggles, Santana is 11-7 with a 3.99 ERA in his career against the Mariners.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. this afternoon in Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners ran into some trouble on Friday as they opened up a three-game series at Safeco Field against the Los Angeles Angels. The Mariners lost by a final score of 9-1.

Kevin Millwood served up a big hit early, givin up a three-run homer to Kendrys Morales in the top of the first inning to put the Mariners in a hole. John Jaso drove in the only Seattle run of the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI single.

Albert Pujols hit an RBI single off of Millwood in the top of the second and Morales picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the top of the fourth with another RBI single to push the Los Angeles lead to 5-1.

Matt Capps entered the game in the sixth inning and gave up a double to Torii Hunter that made it 6-1 Angels. In the top of the ninth, Alberto Callaspo hit an RBI double and Bobby Wilson followed up with a two-run home run that put the game firmly out of reach, 9-1.

The good news is that the Mariners will have Felix Hernandez on the mound in Saturday's game as they try to even up the series.

As the Los Angeles Angels come to Safeco fresh off a sweep of the Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners are turning to their veteran starter to stop the Halos current streak.

Kevin Millwood (4-11, 4.28) gets the ball for Seattle, looking to a recent skid of his own. He's posted a 0-3 record with a 5.76 ERA in his past three starts, though has won his last two against the Angels, sporting a 1.06 ERA in those outings. He hasn't faced them in a long while though, with his last start against L.A. coming in August of 2010.

Dan Haren (8-10, 4.82 ERA) will take the bump for the Halos, looking to end his month on a high note. He's had a rough one, posting a 0-2 record with a 6.27 ERA in four August starts, including a 7-4 loss to Seattle back on Aug. 11, while taking a no decision in his last outing after 5.2 innings of two run ball against the Tigers. Haren does have some success at Safeco, owning a 5-2 record with a 1.99 ERA in 10 games there.

The Mariners are trying to stay hot. They return home to host the Angels for three games.

The Seattle Mariners have been one of the hottest teams in baseball since the All-Star Break. Although the team ran into a reality check recently in Chicago as they were swept by a quality team in the White Sox, they likely regained a measure of confidence as they return home to Safeco Field after taking three of four games from the Minnesota Twins.

The Mariners will host their division rivals the Los Angeles Angels, another quality opponent. The Angels are fresh off a sweep of the scuffling Boston Red Sox, so this series may be more evenly-matched than it may have seemed a few months ago. Particularly with King Felix taking the mound in the second game of the three-game series.

TV Schedule & Probable Pitchers

Friday's game will begin at 7:10 p.m. PT and will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. Dan Haren has historically pitched well against the Mariners and will be going for his ninth win of the season. Kevin Millwood is still looking for his fifth win and has only picked up one win in his last 16 starts.

Saturday's first pitch will be at 1:05 p.m. PT and the game will be televised nationally on FOX. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. Ervin Santana has been terrific recently, with a 3-1 record over his last six starts. He'll need all the help he can get as he takes on Felix Hernandez at Safeco in the FOX game of the week.

Sunday's finale will get started at 1:10 p.m. PT and will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. The Angels will have their ace on the hill in the finale as Jered Weaver tries for his 17th win as he takes on Hisashi Iwakuma. The Mariners starter has been lights-out in his last four starts and picked up a win in Anaheim recently.
