Rain delays can be cruel in the game of baseball. As the Seattle Mariners attempted to avoid a sweep on Sunday, the club led the Chicago White Sox for the first six innings. The Sox then rallied in the seventh with two outs, and mother nature forced the series finale to be called short after just 6.2 innings of play.

Seattle took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single off the bat of Jesus Montero. Chicago then tied it up at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly from Jordan Danks that scored Alex Rios from third. Kevin Youkilis tripled in the third to give the White Sox their first lead of the game at 2-1.

Casper Wells hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead. It was his eighth long ball of the season.

With rain falling and the umpires close to calling the game, Kevin Millwood recorded the first two outs quickly in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and two-run blast from Tyler Flowers gave Chicago a 4-3 lead. The next two batters went on to reach base before the umpires officially called for a rain delay.

Three hours and 52 minutes later, the game was called. Mariners lose 4-3.

The Seattle Mariners were hoping to get back in the win column and even up their series against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Instead, they suffered their second straight loss by a final score of 5-4 as an early lead went up in smoke.

The Mariners plated three quick runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run Kyle Seager homer; the third baseman's 14th of the year.

The White Sox chipped away, with Paul Konerko hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to get the White Sox on the board. Alex Rios added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the Mariners lead to 3-2. Blake Beavan was still in line for the win, but the Sox were able to take the lead in the sixth inning. Tyler Flowers led off the home half of the sixth with a home run to tie things up before Dewayne Wise hit the go-ahead RBI single with two outs.

The Mariners had a bases-loaded opportunity late, but pinch hitter John Jaso was for once unable to be the hero. Alexei Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly for Chicago in the eighth inning for a big White Sox insurance run.

That Ramirez run would end up being the difference, as Seager hit his second home run of the game with two outs in the top of the ninth. Justin Smoak followed up with a single and Jaso once again had a chance to drive in pinch runner Munenori Kawasaki. Jaso hit a pop foul out on the first pitch he saw to end the ball game in another tough loss.

The Mariners will attempt to avoid the sweep on Sunday.

Eric Thames and Michael Saunders collided at the right-center wall as Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to snap Seattle's eight-game winning streak at U.S. Cellular field on Friday night. Chicago won by a score of 9-8.

Right-hander Addison Reed got the win for the White Sox and improved to 3-1 on the season. Tom Wilhelmsen picked up the loss and a blown save for Seattle.

The Mariners went into the bottom of the ninth riding the momentum of an six-run offensive barrage. Jesus Montero began the inning with a solo home run to left field off Philip Humber. Next, Dustin Ackley hit a two-RBI single that scored Trayvon Robinson and Justin Smoak. Next, Kyle Seager hit a sacrifice fly that scored Brendan Ryan while John Jaso drove in two more runs with an RBI single that gave the Mariners its final two runs of the inning.

None of it mattered, though, as an RBI single by Kevin Youkilis and the eventual game-winner from Konerko sealed the Mariners' fate. The teams will square off again on Saturday as the Mariners look to rebound from the loss.
