The Seattle Mariners are suddenly rolling. After sweeping the Kansas City Royals on Sunday by a final score of 7-6, the Mariners are 7-3 over their last 10 games, have won four straight and are only nine games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West. While contention is certainly a long shot -- and the Mariners are still 10 games under .500 -- these past four games are a very positive sign as the post-Ichiro era begins.

The Mariners very nearly let the game slip away due to the potentially-on-his-way-out-of-town Brandon League and Oliver Perez out of the bullpen in the eighth inning, but they managed to hold on for the big win to sweep the Royals out of town.

Mike Carp hit an RBI double in the bottom of the second to get the scoring started, but Alcides Escobar evened things up in the third with a two-out RBI single. An RBI double from Trayvon Robinson and a sacrifice fly from Brendan Ryan in the fourth put Seattle back on top 3-1, but Escobar managed an RBI groundout in the fifth to get the Royals back to within a run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Seager hit a two-run RBI single with -- what else? -- two outs to make it 5-2 Seattle.

The eighth inning was a terrifying one for Mariners fans. After Felix Hernandez recorded the first out of the inning, Brandon League came in and promptly gave up a single and stolen base to Escobar. League struck out Lorenzo Cain for the second out, but gave up an RBI single to Billy Butler and a single to Salvador Perez. League was pulled and Oliver Perez came in to try to wiggle out of the jam, but threw a wild pitch that advanced both runners and gave up a single to Eric Hosmer that tied the game 5-5. All three eighth-inning runs were charged to League.

The Mariners were able to answer back right away in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs. Mike Carp doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a throwing error on a Trayvon Robinson bunt. Robinson ended up at second on the play and eventually scored on a Casper Wells single that made it 7-5.

The M's still weren't out of trouble, as Tom Wilhelmsen gave up an RBI groundout with two outs in the ninth -- again from Escobar -- but struck out Lorenzo Cain swinging to finally end the game and secure the sweep.

Felix Hernandez was struck by a ball on Sunday afternoon while pitching against the Royals. He was hit on his left wrist and was clearly in pain at first, but still managed to stay in the game and continue pitching. Since the incident, Hernandez has struggled to consistently throw strikes and the wrist continues to bother him.

Here is the latest from Safeco Field.

It is a good sign that it was his left wrist -- his non-throwing wrist, in other words -- but you still have to worry about Hernandez. As for now it appears Hernandez will continue pitching, but he will definitely be evaluated after the game wraps up. X-rays will probably be taken just as a precaution.

As for the game itself, the M's currently lead the Royals 3-2 in the 6th inning.

Sources tell FOX Sports' Jon Morosi that the Seattle Mariners are considering trading for outfielders Josh Willingham and Allen Craig.

The M's are desperate for offensive upgrades that will help the team this season, but more importantly in the next two to three years. Currently, the M's are tied for the American League's worst batting average at .231. The team does not have a player on the roster hitting above .270.

The Mariners have the American League's worst offense - 3.9 runs per game entering Sunday - and general manager Jack Zduriencik is looking for hitters who could fit into their lineup for the next two or three seasons, according to major-league sources.

Minnesota Twins left fielder Josh Willingham is hitting .273 with 27 home runs and 78 RBIs through 96 games. St. Louis Cardinals Allen Craig is batting .295 with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs through 60 games.

If the Mariners were to acquire Willingham, they'd have him under contract until through the end of the 2014 season. Craig would be under club control until 2016.

The Seattle Mariners are having a wonderful time thus far in their four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. On Saturday, they took their third straight against the Royals at Safeco Field by a final score of 4-3.

Billy Butler hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning to give Kansas City an early lead. Jesus Montero came through with a big hit in the top of the third for the M's, as his two-run homer gave Seattle a 2-1 lead. Miguel Olivo singled home Kyle Seager in the third to extend the lead.

Alcides Escobar hit an RBI triple in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 3-2, but Mike Carp got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth that ended up being the difference maker. Tom Wilhelmsen gave up another RBI triple to Lorenzo Cain in the top of the ninth, but got Alex Gordon to ground out to end the game.

Kevin Millwood finally picked up another win with one one run allowed in 6.1 innings (none earned) on six hits and one walk. Millwood improves to 4-8. Wilhelmsen was awarded his 13th save.

The Mariners will go for the four-game sweep on Sunday.

At this point, the Seattle Mariners are likely wishing they could play against the Kansas City Royals every day. Last week, the M's took three of four games from the Royals at Kaufman Stadium in a series of high-scoring affairs. On Friday night, Seattle held Kansas City to just one run for the second night in a row as they picked up the 6-1 win.

The Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a three-run homer from John Jaso. Salvador Perez hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the second for the Royals' only run of the game. The M's answered back in the bottom of the second and stretched their lead out to 5-1 with an RBI double from Dustin Ackley and a Jaso sacrifice fly. Mike Carp belted a homer in the sixth for one last insurance run.

Blake Beavan evened up his record at 6-6 and had yet another quality start since being recalled, giving up one run on four hits and one walk in 6.2 innings.

Seattle will attempt to capture the series win on Saturday.

After the Seattle Mariners have said farewell to Ichiro Suzuki, the new era officially begins. Luckily, it got started with a win, as the Mariners defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals by a final score of 4-1 on Thursday night to kick off a four-game series at Safeco Field.

The Mariners jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a two-out, two-run RBI single from Mike Carp. The Royals cut that lead in half in the top of the fourth with an RBI double from Billy Butler, but the Mariners were able to get that run right back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Brendan Ryan.

An RBI double by Carlos Peguero in the bottom of the sixth tacked on a big insurance run for the M's and knocked Royals starting pitcher Luis Mendoza out of the game.

M's starter Jason Vargas gave up just one hit and three walks in eight innings. He combined with Tom Wilhelmsen for the two-hitter. Both Kansas City hits were doubles by Billy Butler, one off each pitcher.

The Mariners have said goodbye to Ichiro. Now they'll welcome the Royals for a four-game series to kick off the new era of the team.

The Seattle Mariners have had a rough few days. They traded Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees, demoted Justin Smoak and then dropped two out of three games to the Yankees and their old friend. Now they'll try to lick their wounds and rebound against the Kansas City Royals, who come to Safeco Field for a big four-game set beginning on Thursday.

While the M's series win streak stalled out at two, they'll have a chance to start a new one over the weekend against Kansas City, who are coming off a series loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

TV Schedule & Probable Pitchers

Thursday's game will begin at 7:10 p.m. PT and will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. The Royals will send Luis Mendoza to the hill, who is 4-6 with a 4.31 ERA and coming off a couple of strong starts. The Mariners will take the field behind Jason Vargas, the team's only 10-game winner and potential trade target.

First pitch on Friday will be at 7:10 p.m. PT and the game will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. Jeremy Guthrie is coming off making his Royals debut and it did not go well. Guthrie is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in the American League. Blake Beavan is starting for the Mariners and coming off his best pro start. He'll have a chance to even up his 5-6 record.

Saturday's game will get started at 1:10 p.m. PT and will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. Bruce Chen has not picked up a win in his last five starts and enters the game with a 7-8 record and 5.54 ERA. He'll go up against the Mariners' Kevin Millwood, who has lost four straight.

The finale on Sunday will begin at 1:10 p.m. PT and will be televised on ROOT Sports. You can catch the radio broadcast on ESPN 710. Will Smith baffled the Angels in his last start, but will be going up against Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who will almost certainly have an easier time against the Royals lineup than against the Yankees. Hernandez will be going for his 10th win.
