The Seattle Seahawks made one of the more unconventional pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by taking West Virginia defensive end Bruce Irvin with their first round pick. Irvin provides more of that speedy and athletic profile that Pete Carroll loves to see from his players. With Seattle likely facing an uphill climb to chase San Francisco in the NFC West, upgrading defense is a priority to make sure they can win in the trenches.

Greg Cosell of NFL.com files this report, and he shows why Irvin fits for what the Seahawks are looking for. Seattle needs to get a better pass rush to beat the best quarterbacks in the league, and Irvin provides that type of talent.

Let’s discuss Irvin the player, and place him in the context of NFL 2012. It could easily be argued based on tape study that Irvin was the most explosive edge pass rusher in the draft. Think about that for a minute. The most important defensive priority in today’s NFL is rushing the quarterback. You can go all the way back to Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh in the 1980s; Walsh, always a step ahead, said that fourth quarter pass rush was the key to winning. His theory has evolved to the point where it encompasses all four quarters. Thus, the Seahawks selected a player with explosive attributes at a premium position.

Minutes after the NFL Draft completes (or, probably even before), teams begin to work the phones with agents and players, trying to convince the best of the rest to come to their team. These undrafted rookie free agents must make a big decision if faced with multiple teams' interest - which franchise gives them the best chance to catch on? Which team has the best scheme fit? Which team's roster is weak at their specific position?

Last season, the Seahawks signed 20 of these rookie free agents, and throughout the year, several of them stuck with the team. Doug Baldwin, an under the radar receiver out of Stanford led the Seahawks in receiving. The lesson? Don't look past the oft-forgotten 'UDFA's'.

One player that I've been intrigued with - frantically looking for game footage and scouting reports to learn more on - is former Oregon WR Lavasier Tuinei. At 6'5, 220, he's long, fast, and possesses soft hands and a large catching radius. He was a 'touchdown maker' at Oregon, finding the endzone 10 times in 2011, and will look to impress in training camp and earn a spot on the roster. Rob Rang published his 'favorite 20' undrafted free agents on Tuesday, and guess who made the list?

WR Lavasier Tuinei, Seattle Seahawks: Besides boasting arguably the coolest name in unrestricted free agency, the Oregon Ducks' leading receiver last year also boasts the long, lanky frame and soft hands Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll has shown a preference for over his coaching career in the NFL and NCAA.

Tuinei lived up the seam and in the slot, and some have speculated that he might be tried at tight end, in a similar fashion as the Saints use Jimmy Graham. It's something I'll be watching for in training camp.

Seattle's first round draft pick from this year, Bruce Irvin, bristles at the idea that he's a 'one-trick pony,' that all he's good for is in rushing the passer. In the Seahawks 4-3 defense, that's his main role anyway, but Pete Carroll's LEO position is also asked to defend the run in some situations and this has caused some to wonder if Irvin will be effective early in his career. Irvin was on KJR Sports Radio shortly after being drafted, and addressed some of those concerns. In describing his potential as a pass rusher, he pointed out that West Virginia's scheme on the defensive line was primarily aimed at stopping the run.

"No disrespect to my coaches [at West Virginia]. They emphasize on stopping the run, and they were good at it. They developed me more as a player in my final year, but as a far as pass rushing - that wasn't their thing. And I'm not the only player who would say that. It's no disrespect to them but my coach wasn't a pass-rushing coach . . . And like I said, just imagine if I get a coach who actually teaches me moves and teaches me counter moves and how to set up people. Man, I could be a double-digit sack guy in this league for a long time."

He continued:

"It ain't that I can't play the run, it's how they wanted me to play the run. We ran a 3-3-5 stack defense, I was 235 pounds and you got me in a three technique? I can't help you. You got me going against two 300-pounders and I'm only 235? I don't know anybody who could play the run against two 300-pound guys at 235 pounds. But you put me in a five technique and you ask me to hold center edge and don't let anything get outside of me, I can do that. I think people just kinda misunderstood and didn't really know the basis of our defense. We were the only team that ran a 3-3-5 stack in the country. I was a different type of player and that's not a typical defense for me, but I feel like I was still pretty productive - 23 sacks in two years, so you know, I made the best out of the situation."

This is applicable to the Seahawks because of the importance Pete Carroll and his staff put on stopping the run. The LEO's primary concern is pressuring the quarterback, but that doesn't mean they can just ignore a running back carrying the ball past their gaps. Chris Clemons has been a very consistent and successful starter for the Seahawks in his two seasons here because of his rare ability to get to the quarterback but also play the run. We'll see how Irvin fares, but it's worth noting that the scheme at West Virginia wasn't exactly ideal for a player his size.

The Seattle Seahawks made some unorthodox moves in the 2012 NFL Draft, but despite their insistence in having a game plan and sticking to it, the analysts and evaluators feel as though the team seriously underperformed with their selections.

Sports Illustrated has released their complete grades for the 2012 NFL Draft. Here is how the Seahawks fared:

Seattle Seahawks: Oh right, this is how Ingram made it to San Diego — the Seahawks went bonkers and picked Bruce Irvin at 15. Could he develop into a solid pass-rusher? Sure, but this was a spit take-inducing selection. LB Bobby Wagner (47) and RB Robert Turbin (106), both from Utah State, will help, and QB Russell Wilson (74) has a bright future, even if Seattle didn’t really need him. Everything else was … very … blah. Grade: C

The Seahawks will look to prove a lot of analysts wrong in the 2012 season and beyond.

Now that the 2012 NFL draft is finally over, it's time to dissect it each and every way possible, starting with some overall draft grades, provided by SB Nation's very own Ryan Van Bibber.

No one in the NFC west got an outstanding mark aside from the St. Louis Rams, though the Seahawks were right behind them, getting stamped with a B for this year's draft class.

Here is Van Bibber with the commentary:

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Bruce Irvin. He has talent, and I tend to underwrite character issues a little because, well, twentysomethings sometimes act stupid. Seattle's 2012 draft class will be judged by Irving. With Russell Wilson, the Seahawks may be trying to sew together a trio of iffy quarterbacks into a great one. How'd that work for Frankenstein?

The Bobby Wagner pick is a solid. Robert Turbin fits well behind Marshawn Lynch.

The Seahawks still seem to have a gigantic question mark at the quarterback position, but still drafted well for things that they needed, picking up solid talent for the future, though could have some impact this season.

Grades are in, and the Seahawks' draft is earning mixed reviews.

Not a single down of football has been played. Not a single rookie has taken his first snap. But it's never too early for experts to start grading the 2012 NFL Draft. So let's see what they're saying about the Seattle Seahawks.

The SportingNews gave the Seahawks a D:

FOX Sports gave the Seahawks a B:

Their entire draft was one shocker after another. In the first round, they took West Virginia's Bruce Irvin, who was off a lot of boards because of his arrest last month on a vandalism charge. But Irvin does have tons of ability and, like Carroll said, might be the best pass rusher in this draft.

They made a questionable move at the top with Irvin, bounced back by taking Wagner, but then took Russell Wilson in the third when they just signed Matt Flynn. Why? They did some good things on the final day, but Irvin is the key.

The Seattle Seahawks tied for the lowest grade among all 32 teams, a C-minus punctuated with this comment from Kiper: "The needs were met outside of wide receiver, but in terms of maximizing value, there are huge questions. Again, this is a grade of the draft process, not the players alone."

It's popular to pan the Seahawks' draft. While we're not giving them an "A," the 2012 Seattle picks are largely understandable and hardly "mindboggling" as Mel Kiper's hair has claimed. No. 15 is early for a situational pass rusher, but no defender in this class has a quicker first step than Irvin. Wagner is a thumper and addresses a need. Wilson is going to make Tarvaris Jackson expendable. Turbin adds physicality to a backfield lacking it behind Marshawn Lynch. Howard, Toomer, and Guy can be year-one role players. Lane, Sweezy, and Scruggs are under-the-radar picks. Realistically, the Seahawks didn't overdraft anyone on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and they consistently kept in mind need. It's a better group than people are saying.

Sounds like the Seahawks' draft is receiving mixed reviews. Much of it comes down to the fact that come people "get it", and others have not caught on to Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider's draft style and philosophy.

One thing that should be factored into the Seahawks' draft grade is the fact that they went into the draft holding only 6 picks, but were able to acquire 10 when all was said and done. To be able to nearly double your draft class should not go unnoticed.

The Seattle Seahawks made plenty of unorthodox moves at the 2012 NFL Draft, but nothing that seemed like it could have been called an outright mistake. The analysts don't seem to agree, however, as many were underwhelmed by the Seahawks' selections over the weekend.

Here is what Rob Rang of CBS Sports had to say:

Seattle Seahawks: C

The Seahawks pulled one of the real shockers of the first round with the selection of passing rushing specialist Bruce Irvin at No. 12 overall. At 6-3, 242 pounds, Irvin is too small to be a traditional 4-3 defensive end but in head coach Pete Carroll's scheme, size isn't as important as speed for the right defensive end (or LEO) position and Irvin certainly has that. Drafting a specialist at No. 15 is a stretch but despite boasting a very good defense on first and second down a year ago, Seattle's lack of pass rush has killed them in recent years. Few will call Irvin's pick a reach a year from now if he ranks among the rookie leaders in sacks. Second round pick Bobby Wagner's versatility and reliable open-field tackling skills could earn him a spot in the starting lineup as a rookie. General manager John Schneider and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell loved Russell Wilson's instincts and ignored concerns about his height to make him another surprising Seahawks' pick in the third round. The more immediate impact will be made by Seattle's pair of fourth round picks -- running back Robert Turbin, whose power, surprising speed and reliable pass-blocking could make him a valuable backup to star Marshawn Lynch and potentially defensive tackle Jaye Howard, who was coached by former Seahawks' defensive line coach Dan Quinn at Florida. Fifth-round project Korey Toomer (Idaho) and former Kentucky standout Winston Guy are also intriguing third-day picks.

Interestingly, Rang's point of view was one of the more positive ones. Vinnie Iver of the Sporting News chimed in with this take:

Seattle Seahawks (D)
Key picks: DE Bruce Irvin, ILB Bobby Wagner.

They went for defensive head-scratchers when more reliable prospects were on the board.

Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star was even less kind:

Seattle Seahawks D-

The selection of Irvin so early was a shocker, but the Seahawks badly needed a pass rusher, and he had 221/2 sacks in 26 college games. Wagner was a head-scratcher despite his strong Senior Bowl performance. The undersized Wilson will get a shot to compete with newcomer Matt Flynn and incumbent Tarvaris Jackson.

The world will have to wait and see whether the Seahawks are geniuses or fools. As in most cases, the final answer will likely be somewhere in the middle.

When the 2012 NFL Draft officially wrapped on Saturday, it was really just a prelude to the flurry of activity that came with the rush to sign undrafted free agents. The Seattle Seahawks, along with every other team in the league, scrambled to pick up some additional players from this year's deep talent pool.

Danny Kelly over at Field Gulls was kind enough to round up a list of all the official and rumored UDFA signings.
