The season is over for the Washington Huskies.

Lorenzo Romar's squad overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to force Tuesday night's NIT semifinal game against Minnesota into overtime. However, the Golden Gophers pulled out a 68-67 victory in overtime to advance to the NIT championship game on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

Down by two points, Washington's C.J. Wilcox stole the basketball in Minnesota's backcourt and converted on a layup with 19 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Minnesota's Andre Hollins scored all seven of Minnesota's points in the overtime period to lead his team to victory. Hollins finished with 20 points for the Golden Gophers.

Washington was led by the efforts of Terrence Ross who scored a game-high 21 points. The Huskies benefited from an improved effort on the boards in the second half. Washington was out-rebounded 21-13 in the first half, but held a 22-14 rebounding advantage in the second half.

In his final game, Washington senior Darnell Gant finished with 12 points and ten rebounds.

Washington's lackluster defense is being exposed by the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Tuesday night's NIT semifinal game. Minnesota leads the Huskies 38-26 at halftime with forward Rodney Williams leading the way with 12 points.

The Huskies struggled from the beginning of the game, going one-for-nine from the field and turning the ball over two times in the game's first five minutes. Terrence Ross has carried the team's offense, with 14 of the team's 26 first half points. The rest of Washington is five-for-21 from the field.

The Huskies will need a better offensive showing in the second half along with a better performance on the glass if they want to make a comeback; The Golden Gophers are out rebounding Washington 21-13.

Tuesday's quarterfinal matchup between Washington and Oregon didn't feel like your typical NIT game.

Sure, it was only the NIT. And make no mistake, the championship game of the Not Invited Tournament is still just for a school to say it has the 69th best team in the country.

But when Oregon and Washington met at Hec Ed in Seattle there was an intensity and edge rarely present in an NIT quarterfinal.

UW's 90-86 victory over Oregon on Tuesday night was an emotion-filled affair that had all the trimmings of a rivalry game. There were big shots, there was contact, and there were more bad calls on both teams than you could shake a stick at.

The Dawg Pack had one of its best games of the season, but the Oregon fans that made the trip certainly made themselves heard.

In the end, C.J. Wilcox hit his free throws and the UW's second-half defense was just good enough to punch the Huskies tickets for their second trip to New York this season. But not before playing a classic game, which illustrated exactly why Oregon is becoming one of the UW's rivals in the mold of UCLA and Arizona.

The rivalry between the two schools on the gridiron is well documented, as is the fans' mutual hate. That rivalry has exposed itself on the hardwood as well, albeit in fits and starts.

Oregon fans taunted the UW's Nate Robinson in the early-2000's by holding up cardboard cutouts of Gary Coleman and chanting the minuscule actor's name to poke fun at Robinson's height.

Robinson famously retaliated by dunking at the end of a win at Oregon once the game had been decided.

The rivalry is gaining fervor and importance, indicated by the fact that there hasn't been a sweep in the series since the Huskies did it in 2008-09. Both teams know the game is important, and now that both teams are near the top of the conference - and will be for as long as they have their current head coaches - the two rivalry games per season will have strong March implications.

The Pac-12 may be down, but as long as Arizona, Washington and UCLA continue to beat each other year after year, there will always be interest in the conference. Well you can add Oregon to that mix now, because the Ducks have established themselves as one of the UW's main rivals in basketball, and have earned their place in the upper half of the conference.

It's Washington versus Oregon for a chance to play in the 2012 NIT tournament semifinals at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Washington hosts the Ducks for the teams' third meeting of the season at Alaska Airlines Arena on Tuesday night.

This will be Washington's third consecutive NIT game at home. The No. 1 seeded Huskies beat Northwestern 76-55 last Friday night in the second round to advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal game against Oregon. The No. 3 seeded Ducks come into this game after an offensive-filled 108-97 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday.

Tuesday night's game will be the rubbermatch of the season between these two teams. Washington won its first game against Oregon in late December 76-60, with the Ducks avenging their loss with an 82-57 victory of their own in early February.
