Happy Friday y'all. In today's DTP we explore Washington's new defense, Oregon's most important player, Wazzu's bowl chances and OSU coach Mike Riley's feelings on early enrollees.

UW Defensive Review

The guys over at UW Dawg Pound took a look at the Washington defense yesterday, reviewing how things are playing out at each position so far.

One thing they touched on really stood out to us: they mentioned that players are saying the new coaches are "less animated, and more into taking the time to go in depth to explain how they want things."

We found this particularly interesting because in addition to being a dramatic change in style, it would appear it is a departure in philosophy by Steve Sarkisian. Though we haven't witnessed it first hand under the new defensive staff, we do know that Sark has applied much of what he learned under Pete Carroll while at USC to his own team at Washington. That includes high tempo, high energy, up-beat practices. They are a philosophical staple under Carroll, and had been under Sark as well.

---------------

Kenjon Barner Oregon's "Most Important' Player?

ESPN's Ted Miller is going team-by-team and ranking the "most important' individual player for each squad in the conference. Miller defines "most important player" as "players who could swing a win total one way or the other, based on their living up to expectations. Or their absence."

While we agree Barner is critical to the Ducks' success in 2012, we tend to think the Duck's would be just fine without Barner. We feel De'Anthony Thomas would be able to carry the load if push came to shove. We think that Bryan Bennett and Marcus Mariota are probably more important for Oregon. You can't do much of what the Ducks like to do without a solid cog at the QB position. Just our two cents.

WSU's Bowl Chances

Also from ESPN's Ted Miller, a recent interview on Seattle's 710ESPN radio. Miller discussed some topics relating to Washington State football, including discipline, the QB competition and more.

Notably, Miller tempered some of the more optimistic Cougar fan's enthusiasm, saying that he doesn't see them making a huge jump in the win-column because of some question marks up front and on defense, but does see them making a bowl this year - which is music to any Cougar fan's ears.

Mike Riley Not A Fan Of Early Enrollees

Though he currently has one participating in spring practice, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley is not a fan of early enrollees.

The popularity of enrolling early has increased over the last decade or so, as true freshman have been becoming impact players at an increasing rate. It's always an interesting debate, and Riley's openness about the topic was refreshing.

The Beavers are looking for big things from offensive lineman Michael Philipp.
Polk is one of the most prolific running backs in school history, and has some big shoes to fill. It is still unclear if one back will get the bulk of the carries or if Sark will use a running back-by-comittee approach. This piece from the GoHuskies.com site does a great job looking at the different candidates and the overall RB competition as a whole.

UW Loses OL Colin Porter's For Good

Bob Condotta broke some disappointing news to Husky fans Monday night when he reported that the career of veteran offensive lineman Colin Porter was over due to shoulder complications.

It's a devastating blow to an already thin offensive line, not just because Porter was arguably the best lineman on the roster, but because the Dawgs lack serious depth capable of filling Porter's void.

Devon Blackmon Says....A Lot

Oregon redshirt freshman WR Devon Blackmon spoke with media after practice yesterday and had quite a lot to say about all things Ducks. He talked about the chemistry and expectations of the receiving corps, the difference between his HS and college experiences thus far, and his acclimation to Chip Kelly's offense and college football as a whole.

In high school, Blackmon was never at a loss for words, and that is still the case now. It's a very informative interview with a very well-spoken kid.

The guys at Cougcenter began taking an early look at how Washington State fared in early computer rankings last night.

The Cougars ranked last in the PAC-12 North. and 11th in the conference as a whole, ahead of only Colorado.

The rankings are interesting and all, but the spirited discussion that follows the article is what I found most interesting. Clearly Mike Leach's presence has raised expectations in Pullman, and Coug fans aren't shy about expressing opinions on the topic.

Cliff Kirkpatrick provides some notes on Oregon State's spring practices thus far, including some tidbits on Mike Riley and play-calling duties - which he is currently doing himself this spring. Also of note, receiver Markus Wheaton seems to be embracing, and advocating, to be a team leader. The senior wideout knows it's his time to step up as an upperclassman, and appears to be doing just that.

We're baaaaackkk. After a little getaway in Las Vegas we are back at it this week bringing you the college football news you crave about the teams you love. In today's edition we look at UW WR Kasen Williams, former WSU QB Ryan Leaf, Oregon's offensive line, and Oregon State's first week of spring practice.

It's good to be back, see you after the jump.

Williams Aiming To Raise The Bar

Washington Huskies WR Kasen WIlliams, statistically speaking, had the second-best season of any freshman wide receiver in UW history, as noted in this piece by Bob Condotta.

As Bob points out, though the season is respectable from a historical standpoint, the taste many Dawg fans have in their mouth tells a different story. U-Dub fans were hoping Williams would have made a similar impact to what Robert Woods or Marqise Lee did their freshman seasons down at USC,, or what Marquess Wilson did at Wazzu.

That being said, Williams has enormous potential, and is still capable of realizing it before his time in Seattle is complete. And relatively speaking, he already is well on his way to doing so when compared to those freshman wideouts of the past.

---------------

Oregon O-Line Could Be A Strength

We are partial to offensive linemen here at The DTP, so any time there is a good story on them, we jump on it. This is one on Oregon's offensive line and the promise it's showing this spring.

The Ducks already are returning 3 starters along the front five from last season, and as Aaron Fentress points out, are finding some quality depth that will allow them to make the O-line a position of strength in 2012. A good chunk of the depth will come from the heralded 2011 recruiting class.

Fentress also revisits the line of 2008 in the piece - which featured a player Seahawks fans will know well, Max Unger.

Ryan Leaf's Saga About More Than Football

This weekend the Seattle Times ran an in-depth feature by Danny O'Neil on Ryan Leaf and his history of off-the-feild struggles. It was an incredible piece, that in some ways, tugged on our heart a little bit.

O'Neil details Leaf's highs as a football player and his lows as an addict, and everything in between. We often play the YouTube clip in our minds of Leaf yelling at a reporter as our memory of him, but O'Neil's piece reminds us there is so much more - good and bad - to the ex-Washington State star QB.

Oregon State concluded its first week of spring practices, and Cliff Kirkpatrick summarizes the first three practices in this article.

The first week of spring practice at any school usually features a lot of installation, which was the case in Corvallis. But coach Mike Riley is pleased with the execution of what has been put in thus far and that's a good thing for the undermanned Beavers. They are managing the lack of depth well, and so far all seems to be going smoothly.

The University of Washington kicks off spring football today, and the Tacoma News-Tribune's Ryan Divish ran a preview this morning.

The Huskies, as we've noted here in The DTP, will be making the move to morning practices - one of many changes taking place at U-dub this spring. Divish elaborates on that, and the other changes, as well as five questions the Huskies hope to answer by the end of spring ball.

Steve Sarkisian's Pre-Spring Presser

Also from Ryan Divish is video/audio from Sark's pre-srping press conference that took place Friday.

Sark hits on everything from depth (or lack thereof), injury updates and even discusses possibly revisiting the "running back-by-committee" that he famously juggled at USC. And of course, he talks about the defense.

LaMichael James Gives Back

Ex-Oregon RB, and current NFL prospect, LaMichael James returned home this week to give back to his alma mater Liberty-Eylau High School in Texarkana, Texas.

James donated equipment from SKLZ, a company he now represents, for student-athletes at the school. Naturally, he also spoke to the student-body about overcoming odds and disadvantages of being from a small town. It's always good to see athletes giving back to the community. Good work LMJ.

OSU Spring Depth Chart

Oregon State released its spring depth chart, and as expected the Beavers will be without a handful of players this spring, notably, along the offensive line.

One thing that is encouraging, however, is that Cliff Kirkpatrick points out that 85% of the team gained weight this offseason. That's a testament to the Beavers' strength coach and his staff.

Chip Kelly Closes Oregon Practices

Our friends at Addicted To Quack reacted to the news that Oregon coach Chip Kelly has decided to close spring practices in Eugene. And they are befuddled.

It doesn't really seem like there's a reason for the Ducks to close practice, and I thought this point by David Piper was extremely well put:

Perhaps Kelly simply wants to eliminate distractions for his team--although if they want to accomplish what everyone expects them to next fall, they need to learn to deal with many more distractions then a few people on the sidelines during practice.

This sort of thing is really the M.O. for Chip Kelly, but at the same time you can't argue with the results he is producing. In addition to the post on ATQ, the comments thread that follows is equally insightful as to just how strong fans feel about this move.

Bill Doba Returning To The Palouse

As a part of the lead-up to its spring game Washington State in planning a number of events, which includes the return of former head coach Bill Doba. It will mark Doba's first trip back to the area since 2007 when his tenure as head coach of the Cougars ended.

Truthfully, we don't know much about what Coug fan's feelings towards Doba are, but we have rarely encountered a better human being in the coaching profession. Glad that Wazzu and Doba are on good enough terms that this reunion can happen.

Previewing OSU DB's

OSU returns a group of experienced defensive backs this year, as well as some solid depth at all positions. 2012 is expected to be a year of high-octaine offenses in the PAC-12, particularly through the air.

That being said, the experience in the secondary could be a huge benefit to the Beavers. Some feel this might be one of the better secondaries to take the field in Corvallis in some time.

Tosh Lupoi Re-Launches His Twitter

Washington DL coach Tosh Lupoi made a name for himself because of his outstanding recruiting prowess. One of the ways he did so was via Twitter, where he would interact with recruits and come up with #hashtags like the infamous "#CalGang". Yesterday was Lupoi's twitter re-birth and he came back with a bang. Here was the tweet he used to announce his return:

Your boy is back... the Real Coach Lup is in the building! No pretenders or fakes here. Lets get this #UWNATION and #DAWGPOUND13' ROCKING

#DAWGPOUND13 looks as if it will be the rallying cry similar to what #CalGang was at his previous school. Lupoi had several other tweets throughout the day, and also managed to gain 2,000+ followers within 24 hours of launching the account.

Steve Sarkisian also posted on his blog about Lupoi's new twitter account. Guess this is kind of a big deal around Montlake.

Chip Kelly Talks Spring Ball

The Oregon Ducks begin spring ball next Tuesday, and head coach Chip Kelly held a pre-spring teleconference Wednesday. One that was apparently abruptly cut short by the Ducks' coach.

Kelly fielded questions about the QB competition, which he says is wide-open. However, we feel anyone other than Bryan Bennett starting for the Ducks would be a surprise.

Kelly also said three freshman (DL Arik Armstead, QB Jake Rodrigues and TE Evan Baylis) enrolled early and will participate in spring practice. Have a look to see what else Mr. Personality had to say.

Beavers Face Hurdles This Spring

As we noted yesterday, Oregon State won't be conducting a "spring game", specifically due to a lack of bodies along the offensive line. It's not just the spring game that will be impacted. however.

The RG brings this story on the lack-of-depth issue, and notes it will affect the Beavers ability to run drills all spring. With only eight healthy players on the line, OSU doesn't even have enough players to run with a second-team unit.

Riley doesn't just talk about the line, though. He also gives an outlook for spring practice at all positions, so it's a good read for those looking to get excited and informed about Beaver football.

I didn't win the Mega Millions lottery, which means The Daily 12-PAC will be around at least until the next drawing. In today's edition we look at Washington RB Jesse Callier and a prediction that he will have a big year in 2012. Also, Craig James calls Wazzu coach Mike Leach a Bully. OSU doesn't have enough linemen to hold a spring game, and Oregon has enough WR's for two teams.

These stories, after the jump.

Jesse Callier Poised For A Big Season In 2012

Our good friend @HeismanPundit put together a list of the 12 players in college football whose numbers could "explode" in 2012. Of the 12 players, four were from PAC-12 schools, including Washington's Jesse Callier.

Callier figures to have an expanded role with the departure of Chris Polk, and has showed promise in the opportunities he's has thus far in his Husky career. Here's what the Pundit had to say about what we might expect from Callier in 2012:

Callier is a very talented back who has been in the shadow of Chris Polk the last couple seasons. With Polk gone to the NFL, the job is now Callier’s. He carried the ball just 47 times (for 260 yards) last season, while Polk ran it 293 times, so it stands to reason that he’ll get plenty of opportunities. I actually think there is a good chance that Washington experiences no dropoff at this position and that Callier establishes himself as one of the top backs in the Pac-12 with a season exceeding 1,300 yards on the ground.

We tend to agree.

---------------

WSU Coach Mike Leach Is A "Bully" According To Craig James

Mike Leach's highly publicized ouster as head coach of Texas Tech, rarely gets talked about without Craig James' name coming up. That's because Leach was let go due to an incident involving the former ESPN analyst's son, Adam.

Well now Craig James is running for the U.S. senate, and is having to address his role in Leach's dismissal. Of course, he is sticking to his guns and claiming Leach was a "bully" and that he was just sticking up for his son.

Mike Leach tells a very different version of the incident and his departure from Texas Tech. But for you Coug fans who wanna know just how crazy Craig James is, and how much he hates your coach, have a watch of this campaign video - and have a barf bag close by.

---------------

OSU Won't Hold Spring "Game", Lacks Linemen

The final OSU spring practice will not be a spring game. It's officially called Fan Fest with time TBS. Not enough healthy OL for a game.

Well, that's unfortunate. Spring games are often a nice recruiting tool to show off your program and give fans a taste of football in the spring. At least the Beavers are able to still host the fan fest.

Previewing Oregon's Wide Receivers

Generally, when we think of Oregon we think of running the football. But looking at Aaron Fentress' preview of the UO WR's, we may have it all wrong. The Ducks could have as many as 18 pass catchers in the fall, and that's not counting tight ends.

Of note, Josh Huff is one of two returning starters at WR. However, Huff still has some legal issues to work through from a traffic stop this offseason, and it's unclear what discipline, if any, he will face in terms of game and practice time missed.
