To turn a oft used aphorism on it’s head, the Washington State Cougars had an injury added to the insult of their 30-27 overtime loss to the Utah Utes as quarterback Conor Halliday suffered a lacerated liver during the game, placing him in the intensive care unit at a Pullman, WA hospital, according to The Spokesman-Review’s Vince Grippi.

Although the injury is very serious, Halliday is set to make a full recovery though he obviously won’t be available next week for their final game of the regular season. The Cougars have had more than their fair share of injuries this year a the quarterback position as starter Jeff Tuel went down early in the season with a broken collar bone, then was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome after his return. All the best to both injured QB’s.

The Cougs have one more regular season game at the Washington Huskies next Saturday.

The Washington State Cougars were hoping to improve to .500 against the visiting Utah Utes, and managed to come back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force the game into overtime. In the end, however, key penalties and turnovers led to a 30-27 Cougars loss.

Freshman quarterback Connor Halliday was not quite able to match his spectacular debut from last week, finishing the game 21-for-48 with 290 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw a whopping four interceptions, including throwing a pick to the Utes defense on a third and 25 situation on the first overtime possession by the Cougars. The play was third and 25 due to an illegal forward pass by Halliday. Utah's Coleman Petersen was then able to nail a 38 yard field goal to give the Utes a 30-27 overtime win.

In all, the Cougars had five turnovers, thanks to the four interceptions and a lost fumble. By contrast, the Utes only had two lost fumbles in the game, despite being hit for 105 penalty yards on 11 penalties.

Jared Karstetter led all Cougars wide receivers with 111 yards on six catches and a touchdown.

The Washington State Cougars fought the Utah Utes tooth and nail through a wild fourth quarter and were able to tie the game as time ran out in regulation. The game is heading to overtime with the score tied 27-27.

After going into the fourth quarter with the score tied 10-10, the two teams combined for four touchdowns and two field goals in the final 15:00 of regulation. After Utah managed to go up 20-10 midway through the quarter, freshman quarterback Kristoff Williams completed a 47 yard touchdown pass to Bobby Ratliff on Williams' only snap of the game.

Later in the quarter, Connor Halliday completed another touchdown pass to Jared Karstetter to bring the Cougars to within 27-24. With no time left on the clock, Andrew Furney was able to kick a 17 yard field goal to send the game into overtime.

The Washington St. Cougars and Utah Utes continued their streaky play in the third quarter of Saturday's game as the two sides notched one field goal each. The Cougars and Utes are tied 10-10 heading into the game's final quarter.

Utah received the kickoff to begin the second half but fumbled the ball away on the second play from scrimmage to return possession to the Cougars. The Utes fumbled again later on in the third quarter, and Washington State took advantage with a 20-yard field goal by Andrew Furney. The Utes countered with a 33-yard field goal by Coleman Petersen on their following drive, tying the game at 10-10.

Utah begins the fourth quarter with possession at the Cougar 28-yard line. The Utes are in position to put points on the board early in the fourth quarter: neither team has had much success in generating offense this season, and the team that scores a touchdown first in this final period could ultimately emerge victorious in this Pac-12 battle.

The Washington St. Cougars and Utah Utes came alive offensively in the final two minutes of the second quarter to break a scoreless game open. Though quarterback Connor Halliday tossed another interception in the second period to bring his first half total to three picks, he also tossed a touchdown pass to pull his Cougars into a 7-7 tie at halftime.

The majority of the second quarter played out the same way that the first quarter did: not much movement on offense followed by lots of punts. The two squads combined for five more punts in the second quarter after punting five times in the first quarter as well.

The Utes finally broke out of their offensive slump with under two minutes left on a fake play. Punter Sean Sellwood came out on the field on 4th-and-9. Sellwood faked the punt and instead tossed the ball to Luke Matthews, who proceeded to take the ball 49 yards down the field for a score.

Halilday responded by leading Washington State 77 yards down the field for the Cougars' first score. Halliday completed four passes of 14, 24 and 28 yards to quickly storm down the field, and he capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to Marquess Wilson with 0:33 left in the game's opening half.

The two teams enter halftime tied 7-7. Utah will receive the kickoff to start the second half.

The Washington St. Cougars look to build on last week's impressive 37-27 win over the Arizona St. Sun Devils with a victory over the Utah Utes at home. Through one quarter, the Cougars are on the right rack and lead 7-0.

The Cougars received the game's opening kickoff but both teams struggled to piece together long offensive drives. Neither team marched further than 31 yards down the field on their opening possession, and the two sides followed up back-to-back punts with back-to-back three-and-outs.

Washington State created an opportunity when the Cougars received the ball back with 7:53 left in the period. The Cougars reached Utah's 35-yard line, but an interception of Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday by Eric Rowe gave the ball back to Utah and kept the game scoreless.

On Washington State's final possession of the quarter, Halliday threw another interception- this time to Brian Blechen- to give Utah favorable field position at the Utah 39-yard line with 2:06 left. The Cougars defense has stepped up, however, and the second quarter will open up with Utah pinned back near its own 20-yard line.

The Utah Utes looks to hold on to a slight chance to play for the Pac-12 South title game and a win at Washington State will put them one game closer to that goal. The Cougars upset Arizona State last week and look to build off that win on the arm of freshman QB Connor Halliday, making his first start this weekend.
The Washington State Cougars are still coming off the high of beating the Arizona State Sun Devils last week, but also came out of it a bit banged up, with a couple of key players possibly out this Saturday against the Utah Utes.

According to Vince Grippi at The Spokesman-Review, wide receiver Marquess Wilson (hip) and safety Deone Bucannon (ankle) were on the sideline for most of practice this week, though Wilson returned to practice Thursday, running with the starters towards the end of the game-planning session. Bucannon did some work with the ones on defense, but both are considered questionable for Saturday. Cornerback Daniel Simmons (ankle) returned to practice on Thursday as well.

Right tackle Dan Spitz rolled his ankle again in Wednesday practice, and showed up in a walking boot Thursday and didn't participate. His ankle has been an issue since taking over for Wade Jacobson and may require postseason surgery. He hasn't missed a game yet, so we'll have to wait and see if he plays Saturday. If not, redshirt freshman Jake Rodgers will get his first start.
