Breaking down a nice play from the Seahawks Sunday win against Baltimore.

I'm not going to wax poetic too much about this play but a throw by Tarvaris Jackson in the middle of the 2nd quarter was a thing of beauty. Moving to his left, he lofted a bomb to Doug Baldwin that found its way perfectly located head-high so the rookie receiver could make the catch in stride. This throw was made with a partially torn pectoral muscle and with a rather large human being, intent on his destruction, in hot pursuit.

Let's look at how it went down, and if you please, you can watch it here.

3rd down and 9 with the Seahawks backed up into their own end. The Hawks hold a tenuous 10-7 lead and are looking to maintain their momentum by extending the drive. Darrell Bevell dials up a three wide receiver look with Justin Forsett in the backfield. Forsett motions down and left and prior to the snap is even off the line with tight end Zach Miller on the opposite side.

I've outlined the routes that each receiver will take. Sidney Rice, at the top of your screen, is going to run deep sideline route and to his left, split end Doug Baldwin is going to run a deep post route that he veers off of and heads to the sideline to help his quarterback out.

Mike Williams, at the bottom, will run a slant and Zach Miller and Justin Forsett will be shallow release options for Tarvaris Jackson.

On the defensive side of things, upon the snap you'll see the Ravens run a stunt, pictured blow, and get solid pressure onto Tarvaris Jackson.

Ball is snapped.

Above, you can see the stunt works well, and Robert Gallery doesn't recover quickly enough to close the gap in the line. Tarvaris looks to his best buddy Sidney Rice first, but seeing that he's not open and the Ravens are coming fast, Jackson reacts.

He rushes out of the pocket and eludes the pressure. He drifts to his left and makes a gorgeous throw downfield to a streaking Doug Baldwin.

Baldwin makes the catch in stride and moves downfield 10 or 15 more yards for a 50 yard gain. This puts the Seahawks into scoring range and three plays later, Steven Hauschka connects with a 38-yard field goal. It just brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?

Getty Images

Let's see what some of the numbers tell us about this Seahawks' victory.

The Seahawks managed to do exactly what I thought they'd have to do to get a win this weekend - they made Joe Flacco put the the Ravens on his shoulders and beat them. He wasn't able to.

I brought this point up prior to the game and it played out as such - an inconsistent, and at times this season, rattled Flacco has resulted in a hit-or-miss offensive attack for the AFC-elite Ravens. That had led to previous losses to Tennessee, Jacksonville, and an awful first half against Arizona that exposed the potential weakness on an otherwise strong team. Of course, Flacco has looked elite at times as well - leading comebacks against the above mentioned Cardinals and last week against the mighty Steelers, so really I had hoped that quarterback wouldn't show up. He didn't.

Flacco ended up 29 of 52 for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Looking past that though, you'll see that 35 of those 52 attempts targeted running backs or tight ends, with 24 of his 29 completions finding those players. In other words, the Ravens' receivers only caught five passes all game - 3 to Torrey Smith for 28 yards and 2 to Anquan Boldin for 22 yards. Flacco dumped off to his running backs or checked down to his tight ends time and time again.

Now, 255 yards isn't really something to sniff at, but those were hard-earned yards through the air on a meager 4.9 yards per attempt. The Seahawks secondary did a pretty decent job with 10 total passes defensed - three from Brandon Browner, two from Richard Sherman, one from Kam Chancellor and another from Earl Thomas (though that should have been an interception by Brandon Browner) and gave fits to the Ravens' offense all day.

As is becoming usual, Earl Thomas, Leroy Hill, and David Hawthorne led the way for the Seahawks with Thomas and Hill each recording eight tackles and Hawthorne racking up seven. Chris Clemons managed two quarterback hits and rookie Malcolm Smith got his first NFL sack with a big blitz that brought Flacco down on second down with 9:01 in the game.

The biggest defensive play of the game might have been a David Hawthorn interception though - as Flacco looked to pass to his right, K.J. Wright jumped up to deflect the pass right into Heater's hands, which he returned to the Ravens' 8 yard line. That play netted a Seahawks field goal.

The Seahawks had a pretty impressive offensive day against a very, very good defense. They didn't get into the endzone as much as anyone would like of course, but putting up 22 on the NFL's best defense isn't shameful. The Hawks finished with 327 total yards of offense, 208 through the air and 119 on the ground. Balanced, like they wanted.

Marshawn Lynch was the workhorse - Leon Washington only got three carries and Justin Forsett one - and he accounted for over half of the Seahawks total offense with 167 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 109 yards and caught five passes for 58 yards and was responsible for two nail-in-the-coffin first downs late in the fourth quarter - both extremely difficult running plays he extended after they both looked to be stopped dead. He's the unquestioned player of the game in my mind and Dave Softy Mahler might have said it best when he tweeted "Marshawn Lynch is simply running like a guy who is sick of losing."

The balance between running up the gut and catches passes out of the backfield gives Seahawks fans glimpses of the 'feature back' that Lynch was brought here to be. Now that the offensive line is starting to show semblances of competency, Lynch has rushed for over 100 yards two games in a row.

Sidney Rice and Doug Baldwin both suffered concussions in the game but with that series of unfortunate events, Seattle's depth at receiver really shined through. Golden Tate stepped in rather seamlessly and produced - catching 3 passes for 46 yards, with two key first downs late in the game that kept the offense on the field and extended drives. With both Baldwin and Rice probably missing at least a game going forward as they get back to full health, Tate will have more of a chance to prove to his coaches that he's still a big part of this offense as they grow together.

The Seahawks' tight ends got involved in the action as well, with Zach Miller catching three passes for 24 yards and Anthony McCoy, two for 15. It was nice to see Miller targeted early.

The story on offense though was that the Seahawks rushed the ball 42 times to only 27 pass attempts. The ability to do this, despite only 2.8 yards per carry, ended up being huge for the Seahawks as they ate away at the clock and preserved their fragile lead. The offense wasn't powerhouse by any means - failing to get into the endzone except for once and settling for field goals five separate times - but grabbing and holding an early lead against a very good Ravens team is not something to scoff at.

The Seahawks now sit at 3-6 heading into a stretch of winnable games against St. Louis (2-7), Washington (3-6), Philadelphia (3-6), and St. Louis again. Let's see if the Hawks can manage to string together a few solid performances on both sides of the ball.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to upset the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and pick up their third win of the season. The two teams ended up posting similar overall numbers, but Seattle was able to lean on their talented kicker and hold on for a 22-17 victory. Let's take a look at some of the numbers in this game.

Kicker Steven Hauschka was the main story for the Seahawks, as he was ultimately responsible for recording 16 of Seattle's 22 points. Hauschka kicked five field goals, from 22, 38, 39, 35 and 30 yards, respectively.

Seattle got on the board first, following a one-yard Marshawn Lynch rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter (and Hauschka provided the extra point to put the Seahawks up 7-0). Lynch had a solid game, recording 109 yards on 32 carries and the only Seattle touchdown of the game. Although he only averaged 3.4 yards per carry with a long of 8, his consistency and sure-handedness was one of the keys to Seattle never surrendering the lead following his TD run.

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was also solid, finished 17-for-27 with 217 passing yards and no interceptions. The turnovers were where Seattle really had the advantage in this game. While the Ravens lost two fumbles and added a Joe Flacco interception, the Seahawks didn't allow a single turnover.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to take an early lead against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and never surrender it en route to an upset win. It was their third victory of the season and Marshawn Lynch was one of the Seattle's key offensive contributors.

The Seahawks offense went to Lynch time after time after time in Sunday's game. The end result was Lynch finishing with a career-high 37 carries for a total of 109 yards. He also managed to grab five passes for an additional 58 yards. His first quarter rushing touchdown was the only time that a Seahawks player was able to find the end zone, as all other Seattle scores in the game came in the form of field goals.

Although Lynch only averaged a meager 3.4 yards per carry, he has been the model of consistency. Over the past two games, the running back has 68 carries, which leads the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks managed a huge upset win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, but suffered quite a few injuries along the way.

No fewer than three different Seahawks players left the game with head injuries. Wide receiver Sidney Rice left the game in the third quarter after injuring himself attempting to catch a deep pass. Doug Baldwin, another wide receiver, also left the game near the end of the second half. Safety Kam Chancellor had the nastiest-looking injury of the week as he went helmet-to-helmet on Anquan Boldin and was charged with a penalty. According to the official Seahawks Twitter feed, all three players suffered concussions. Head coach Pete Carroll stated that the status of each of the three players is yet to be determined.

Also suffering an injury in the game was guard John Moffitt, who left the game in the first quarter with a right knee injury and was replace by Lemuel Jeanpierre.

The Seattle Seahawks took advantage of Baltimore Ravens turnovers to take an early lead, then ground the clock out by using their running back to churn out the tough yards. Baltimore coughed up the ball several times deep in their own territory, which Seattle turned into three David Hauschka field goals (which turned out to be the difference in the final margin of victory).

Down 22-10, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens rallied for a late touchdown drive to bring them to within five of the Seahawks. But Seattle ground out the clock when Tarvaris Jackson connected with Golden Tate for two big throws, and Marshawn Lynch proceeded to grind out the clock by rushing for two first downs and catching and converting another one. It was an impressive performance by Lynch, who compiled nearly half of Seattle's offensive production as their leading rusher (109 yards on 3.4 yards per carry) and receiver (58 yards on five catches). It was far from pretty, but Seattle used the run and an effective defensive performance to power their team to victory.

Steven Hauschka is putting the Seattle Seahawks on his back. Hauschka has already tied a franchise record for field goals in a game with five. He got his fifth after David Hawthorne hauled in a deflection off a Joe Flacco pass to put Seattle, returning it deep into Baltimore territory. The Seahawks were stalled at the goal-line though, and the placekicker was forced to boot another field goal through the uprights.

Baltimore finally got more points on the board thanks to a nice drive led by Joe Flacco. Flacco found Ricky Williams for 12 and five yards, Ray Rice for two seven yard catches, and connected with Dennis Pitta for 17 yards and Ed Dickson for two. Billy Cundiff booted in a 35 yard field goal to keep the Ravens within 12, but they need to get their offense going in a hurry if they want to beat the Seahawks.
