The California Golden Bears hosted their Pac-12 rivals the Washington State Cougars on Saturday night, and it was fair to call it something of a lopsided game. Everything appeared to go Cal's way and the Cougars couldn't seem to buy a break. A huge first half was all the scoring that Cal would prove to need, as they locked up a 30-7 victory. The Golden Bears improved to 5-4 as the Cougars dropped to a woeful 3-6 (1-5 in Pac-12 play).

The Cougars were kept off the board entirely until the fourth quarter of the game, when Rickey Galvin managed to get a 5 yard touchdown run. If Cal hadn't fumbled the ball at the edge of their own red zone, it's unlikely that WSU would have scored at all in this one.

It was a lackluster game for quarterback Marshall Lobbestael as well. Although he threw for 155 yards, it seemed like he was throwing an incomplete pass at every crucial moment. He finished the game having completed on only 15 of 37 pass attempts.

The Cougars will be slinking off to lick their wounds after this one, as it was a humiliating defeat where they looked completely punchless on both sides of the ball.

Through three full quarters of play between the Washington State Cougars and the California Golden Bears, the WSU offense has yet to make much of an impact. Compounding the matter is the fact that the Cougars defense allowed Cal to rack up 30 unanswered points to start the game. In the fourth quarter, the Cougars trail, 30-7.

Whereas Cal for the most part has managed to make the most of their opportunities, the opposite has been true for the Cougars. They've been ineffective on both sides of the ball, and entered the second quarter with negative rushing yards.

The Cougars managed to make it to the red zone in the middle of the third quarter, but their drive stalled out. To drive home the point that the Cougars are unable to catch a break, Andrew Furney missed a 27 yard field goal.

Washington State started yet another long drive late in the third quarter, but on 4th and 8, Marshall Lobbestael was unable to connect with Jared Karstetter, and Cal took over on downs. In the first good break of the game for the cougars, Cal running back Isi Sofele immediately fumbled, and Deone Bucannon recovered and returned the ball 11 yards to the Cal 17, allowing the Cougars to begin the fourth quarter already in the red zone. Rickey Galvin was able to pick up a touchdown on a five yard run shortly thereafter to finally get the Cougars on the board.

It would seem like this one is already out of hand for the Cougars, but as always, anything is possible in college football.

The Washington St. Cougars enter halftime with a large deficit against the Cal Golden Bears after only 38 total offensive yards in the first half. The Cougars have had trouble moving the chains and find themselves down 23-0.

The Cougars began the second quarter with possession and marched down to the Cal 35-yard line before a mix-up cost the Cougars a scoring chance on 4th-and-9.

Neither team had success on offense during the next two drives as the Golden Bears went three-and-out and the Cougars managed only 23 yards before being forced to punt. Cal received the ball after the punt at the Cal 29-yard line.

Cal's next possession looked very similar to the two drives in the first quarter that yielded points for the Golden Bears. Quarterback Zach Maynard found receivers and running back Isi Sefele routinely rushed up the Cougar defense for gains of seven-plus yards to keep the chains moving. C.J. Anderson scored Cal's third touchdown of the game with a five-yard carry into the endzone.

The inefficient offensive play of the Cougars continued with another three-and-out. Cal managed to tack on a few more points before the half, using a 43-yard field goal by Giorgio Tavecchio to take a commanding 23-0 lead into halftime.

The Cougars will need a momentous second quarter effort in order to turn this game around. Washington State has generated only 38 total yards of offense so far with only five first downs.

The Golden Bears will receive the kickoff to start the second half.

The Washington State Cougars trail early against the Cal Golden Bears. After an offense-absent quarter by the Cougars, Washington State finds itself down 13-0.

The Cougars received the game's opening kickoff but couldn't generate enough offense to get a first down on their first possession. The Golden Bears responded by taking the ball 66 yards down the field for a score, led by quarterback Zach Maynard and running back Isi Sofele. Maynard ended the drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Miller.

The two teams struggled to generate offense for much of the rest of the quarter. Both the Cougars and the Golden Bears went three-and-out on the following two possessions and neither team got close to scoring until Cal threatened again with less than six minutes left in the quarter.

A 29-yard pass by Maynard set Cal up on Washington State's two-yard line, and Sofele ran in a one-yard score two plays later. Gior Tavecchio had his extra point attempt blocked and Cal came away with a 13-0 advantage.

The Cougars find themselves facing a significant deficit after the game's opening 15 minutes and need to generate some offense in the second quarter. Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael has only four passing yards and will need to find his receivers in order to mount a comeback.

After a strong start to the season, the Washington State Cougars have not been able to catch a break. Despite winning their first conference game against Colorado, the team has lost four in a row. In that span, WSU has given up 139 points and struggled to play a complete football game for all four quarters.

For California, they come in as a team with their own struggles. Head coach Jeff Tedford is on the hot seat and quarterback Zach Maynard has played miserably the last few weeks. Simply put, the Bears are desperate for a win.

The Washington St. Cougars and the California Golden Bears are teams headed in the wrong direction as the 2011 college football calendar turns to November. The loser of this game could be that much closer to seeing the exit.

It looked as if Washington State was finally trending in the right direction after two forceful wins in their first two games against UNLV and Idaho State, but after that they have only one lone win against hapless Colorado. WSU blew a golden opportunity against UCLA and have been lost by three or more touchdowns in their other Pac-12 defeats. Another loss almost assures the Cougars will not be visiting a bowl game this season, and could mean Wulff's time is at an end in Pullman.

Cal football head coach Jeff Tedford is in a similar boat, although it's likelier he'll return even if his Bears suffer another poor season. Cal has lost four of their five games in conference play, most recently a humiliating loss in UCLA. The Golden Bears are reeling and are running out of winnable games. A loss at home to poor Washington State cannot be afforded at all.

This could be a highly competitive contest this week in San Francisco, as the stakes couldn't be any higher for two teams in the cellar of the Pac-12 North.

The Washington State Cougars are looking to save their season with a strong second half of Pac-12 play. That quest continues on Saturday afternoon as the team travels south to take on the Cal Golden Bears.

The Bears are coming off an embarrassing loss to the UCLA Bruins, but that did not stop the oddsmakers in Las Vegas from picking Cal as nine-point favorites this weekend. According to Odds Shark, WSU will be anywhere from nine to 10-point underdogs.

As for the Cougars, the team may have fallen to the high-flying Oregon Ducks this past weekend, but they battled throughout the entire game and stayed within striking distance until late in the second half. This is a team that has been battered by injuries this season and a road victory over the Bears would be huge for the program moving forward.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Berkley.

The Cougars look to snap their current four-game losing streak against Cal this weekend.

The Washington State Cougars host the Cal Golden Bears on Saturday as the Cougars look to snap a four-game losing streak. The Cougars have also lost six straight games to Cal over the past six seasons and will look to capture their first win of the series.

Washington State played well last weekend against the No. 7 Oregon Ducks and scored 28 points on the Ducks defense, ultimately falling by only 15 points by game's end. Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael passed for 337 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while the Cougars running backs- led by Ricky Galvin and Carl Winston- led the ground attack with 125 rushing yards.

Washington State, in fact, recorded more total yards (462) than Oregon did (454) last week. That's encouraging news for an offense that will take on a mediocre Cal defense- allowing 26.4 points per game- this weekend.

The Cal offense has some firepower of its own. Led by quarterback Zach Maynard, the Golden Bears average 28.8 points per game. Last week, however, Cal recorded only 14 points in a loss to the UCLA Bruins.

If the Cougars can score early, they should give themselves a chance in this game against an up-and-down Cal offense. An impressive early showing could put the Cougars in very good position to snap their current four-game losing streak and their six-game overall losing streak to Cal.
