The Cougars lost at the Rose Bowl once again thanks to last-minute heroics by UCLA.

With WSU clinging to a 25-20 lead late in the fourth quarter, Bruins quarterback Kevin Prince threw a hail Mary pass to Nelson Rosario, who hauled it in one-handed for a 58-yard gain that ended on WSU's 10-yard line. After a touchdown and a two-point conversion, UCLA led 28-25.

With over three minutes left, Marshall Lobbestael led the Cougars back to midfield with hopes to score again and clinch the win. Unfortunately, he threw a third-down interception to Andrew Abbott, which allowed the Bruins to run out the clock and pick up a victory.

The final story in this game will be the missed opportunities by the Cougars defense. After three early possessions pushed them into or very near to the UCLA red zone, they were only able to come away with three first-half field goals. They were unable to find the end zone until the second half, where their scoring was two touchdown passes and a fourth field goal from Andrew Furney.

As the fourth quarter begins, the Cougars are playing a closer game than they would probably like, especially since UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut left the game midway through the second quarter with what was eventually revealed to be a broken left leg.

The good news for WSU is that they've finally been able to score a pair of touchdowns after three Andrew Furney field goals. Marshall Lobbestael was able to complete an eight-yard pass to Jared Karstetter midway through the third quarter. He later hurled a 21-yard pass to Rickey Galvin as the Cougars were finally able to take advantage of a winded Bruins defense early in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars have held the Bruins to a pair of rushing touchdowns by Derrick Coleman, but squandered several red zone opportunities in the first half.

The Bruins started creeping back in the second quarter, but the fourth-quarter Galvin touchdown may have put the Cougars in front for good.

Right about now, the WSU Cougars are thanking their lucky stars for the infallible foot of Andrew Furney.

The sophomore kicker has yet to miss a field goal in the 2011 season, and that's a good thing for the Cougars. Although they've held the UCLA Bruins to one touchdown through the first half, they continue to miss key opportunities, most notably when Jared Karstetter dropped a perfect Marshall Lobbestael pass in the end zone at the two-minute warning.

The Cougars reclaimed the lead with Furney's third field goal of the game, all of which have been from less than 30 yards. The Bruins have stopped the Cougars dead in their tracks each time WSU has gotten near the red zone, and the Cougars have missed a couple of key plays that could have given them some more substantial breathing room.

WSU will need to regroup for the second half. The Bruins looks vulnerable, but that vulnerability needs to be capitalized upon.

Cougars quarterback Jeff Tuel was not cleared to play at game time, but his backup Marshall Lobbestael is performing admirably, passing for over 100 yards as WSU completely shut down UCLA in the first quarter.

Although the Cougars have only been able to score six points on a pair of short Andrew Furney field goals, UCLA's offense was completely anemic in the first quarter, when the Cougar's defense shut them down entirely.

The Cougars are looking to avenge their last loss at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and are looking to improve to 2-0 in Pac-12 play. They will need to capitalize more in the red zone for the rest of the game, as UCLA was able to take the lead on an 84-yard touchdown drive midway through the second quarter.

Unfortunate last-minute news for WSU, although not entirely unexpected. Via The Spokesman-Review, junior quarterback Jeff Tuel will not be cleared to play in Saturday night's game against UCLA in Pasadena.

Tuel has a fractured left clavicle and will suit up tonight, but will not be available. The Cougars had already announced that backup quarterback Marshall Lobbestael would be starting tonight's game, but this announcement is worrying for WSU fans.

Tuel will receive more X-rays and be re-evaluated on Wednesday, and at the moment he is questionable for next week's game against Stanford.

The Spokesman-Review also reports that starting right tackle Wade Jacobson is also unavailable tonight, due to a back injury suffered in practice earlier this week. The injury is severe enough that Jacobson was unable to make the trip to Southern California with the rest of the team. Backup Dan Spitz will take his place.

Recent History: The Bruins are 8-5 in games played at the Rose Bowl, while WSU has won three (2006, 2004, 2002) of the last five in Pasadena.
Brian Elsner (Wait For It Seattle)

WSU 31, UCLA 17
There are few teams that I believe just flat out stink. UCLA is one of them. Despite their win over Oregon State (who apparently really stinks), I can't imagine UCLA doing anything this season. Even worse, Nick New-weasel is supposed to be a QB guru. Name their last good quarterback. You can't because he doesn't exist unless his name is
Troy Aikman. WSU is putting up points and I think it continues.

Erik Kariya (SeaTown Sports)

UCLA 31 WSU 21
So I'm sniffing this WSU Kool-Aid and it doesn't smell nearly as bad as I would have expected! Not gonna take a sip yet, but we're getting there. UCLA is not playing cohesive football, but they still have a talent advantage and the home crowd.

Jeff Nusser (CougCenter)

WSU 31, UCLA 28
I think the Cougs' rush defense holds up better than most people think it will, and UCLA's passive pass defense allows Marshall Lobbestael to throw for another 300+ yards. The difference is that the Cougs now have a good enough rushing attack to punch it in from short yardage.

Craig Powers (CougCenter)

UCLA 35 WSU 31
UCLA has a very good running game that I expect the Cougars to struggle with. The Bruins have a below average defense, which should allow WSU to keep this close. Homefield will provide enough advantage for UCLA to come out on top.

James Satterberg (SeaTown Sports)

WSU 31, UCLA 28
This is a must win game for both teams. WSU has a clear path to bowl eligiblity, and it involves beating UCLA and Oregon State, possibly the worst two teams in the conference. UCLA has motivation as well though. Neuhiesel is on the hot seat, and every win counts. Furthermore, the Pac-12 south is currently wide open, and a UCLA win and an ASU loss puts UCLA in a tie for first in the division, something the coaching staff will make quite clear to the players. In the end, I expect WSU to pull it out, but the score will be close.

As the Washington State Cougars head down to sunny Southern California to take on the UCLA Bruins, the elephant in the room remains the question of quarterback Jeff Tuel's status with his broken collarbone healed enough to begin practicing again.

Head Coach Paul Wulff said a few days ago that they wil start backup Marshall Lobbestael even though Tuel has been cleared. The collarbone is a delicate injury that can easily be re-injured, so Wulff is likely erring on the side of caution here. Lobbestael has been solid as his replacement though, giving the Cougs some confidence as the travel to take on the Bruins.
