The Seahawks first-team offense finally started clicking on a few more cylinders and the defense held the Raiders to three points in a game that Seattle dominated throughout. Glancing at the statistics doesn't really tell the whole story -- the time of possession was fairly close for both teams: 32:12 to 27:48 in favor of the Seahawks. The Hawks picked up 21 first downs to Oakland's 18. The Hawks had 2 turnovers to Oakland's 0. Overall, fairly balanced considering the Hawks coughed up the football twice and the Raiders didn't have a turnover.

On the offensive side, you start to see how well the Hawks played when you look at the yardage numbers -- the Seahawks gained 377 yards of offense to Oakland's 228. Seattle ran for 110 yards on the ground to the Raiders' 47. The line gave Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, and Josh Portis time to throw. They opened up holes for Leon Washington, Justin Forsett, Thomas Clayton, and Vai Taua. The Hawks converted several 3rd and short situations and ran the ball into the endzone two times. This semblance of a run game was something that was extremely foreign to the Hawks in 2010 so despite the fact that it's still the preseason, I am excited to see it.

Pete Carroll has made it clear that his philosophy is one that focuses on ball control, maintaining possession, and protecting a lead once you get it. Well, the Seahawks did just that. They controlled time of possession in the first quarter and jumped to a 10-0 lead. The Raiders made it 10-3 at the half but the Seahawks ate up nearly 8 minutes of the third quarter with a 14-play drive that ended with a 4th and 1 play stuffed at the three yard line. Didn't get in the endzone, but put the Raiders in a tough spot backed up in their end. The offense consistently helped the defense stay off the field and when they did come on, they controlled the field position game.

The Seahawks did not punt the ball until the 8:34 mark in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks bend-but-don't-break defense worked to near-perfection tonight as well, keeping the Raiders out of the endzone and limiting them to one measly field goal from 34 yards by Sebastian Janikowski. They didn't appear to get significant pressure on the quarterback but their secondary did a good job of deflecting passes and keeping the offense in front of them. The Raiders ran for only 47 yards after falling behind early, and were unable to mount any kind of a comeback.

The momentum was firmly in the Seahawks hands during this whole game, great timing for the Seahawks as they look to carry that over into Week 1, September 11th at the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks continue to lead 10-3 at the end of the third quarter and a large part of that is due to the success of the Seahawks' run game. The Seahawks put together a 14-play drive that started at the 11:53 mark and didn't end until the 4:49 mark, chewing up over seven minutes of the quarter. It was unfortunately stalled at the three-yard line though as the Seahawks were stuffed on fourth down. This is exactly the type of ball control Pete Carroll loves so it's an encouraging sign.

Thomas Clayton has led the way in the second half with 9 rushes for 41 yards. He's looked decisive and strong in his running and will surely spark a controversy over how many running backs the Seahawks should keep. Right now, Clayton sits behind Marshawn Lynch, Leon Washington, and Justin Forsett on the depth chart, but is putting together a pretty good argument for the Seahawks to find him a spot on the 53-man team. Vai Taua has run the ball twice and tacked on seven yards.

The Hawks will look to grind out the fourth quarter and protect the lead.

The Seahawks are looking strong so far in their matchup tonight against the Oakland Raiders. They lead the game 10-3 at the Half.

Offensive Notes from the First Half:

The Seahawks first-team offense finally got some things going in their fourth preseason game and moved the ball quite well in the first quarter.

In their first drive, the Seahawks moved the ball, including a nicely set-up screen pass to Justin Forsett (which he caught with one hand) on 3rd and 15 that went for 19 yards. Tarvaris Jackson, finally given some time to throw the ball, hooked up with Golden Tate, Kris Durhm and Michael Robinson to march down the field. The drive was killed though when Tarvaris Jackson threw an ugly pick in the endzone.

On the Hawks second drive, Tarvaris Jackson bounced back from his interception and hit Golden Tate deep for a 43-yard gain. Tate had another catch on the drive before it stalled and the Seahawks had to settle for a Jeff Reed field goal.

Jackson left the game after the first quarter after putting up 88 yards of passing on 5/7 attempts with the 1 interception. Charlie Whitehurst came into the game and made a couple of really nice plays -- the most notable coming on a 3rd and 12 situation where he scrambled out of the pocket, threw on the run, and hit WR Patrick Williams for 20 yards and a first down.

Leon Washington had a heads-up play on a third down as he scooped up a deflected pass and ran it for 32 yards and a first down. The Seahawks capitalized on the play, finished the drive, and RB Thomas Clayton punched the ball in from the one yard line to make it 10-0 with 9:11 in the 2nd Quarter.

Whitehurst finished the first half with 6/11 passing for 89 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Justin Forsett carried the ball 6 times for 18 yards.

The real story of the first half was Golden Tate. After enduring rumors that he might get cut on Saturday, Tate showed up by catching 4 passes for 65 yards and played well in the punt/kickoff return game as well. He broke a kickoff return for 34 yards then just before the half broke free for 43 yards on a punt return. Love to see this kind of production and intensity from the second year receiver, and he appears to be making a statement.

Defensive Notes:

On the other side of the ball, the Seahawks defense has looked very good. The Seahawks held the Raiders to 55 yards of total offense in the first quarter and Sebastian Janikowski missed a 52 yard field goal with 5:45 in the 1st. That was the only time the Raiders offense threatened a score in the first quarter. I'll take that kind of production from the first-team defense.

In the second quarter, the first team unit gave way to the backups, but they kept the intensity up. The Raiders put together one longish drive that ended in a Sebastian Janikowski 34-yard field goal. Again, the Hawks played well, had a few penalties from Walter Thurmond and Byron Maxwell, but overall had good energy.

KJ Wright has led the Seahawks thus far with 4 tackles. CB Walter Thurmond has been targeted a lot as well, but has held his own with 3 tackles.

At Half, the Seahawks have held the Raiders to 133 total yards -- 94 through the air and 39 on the ground. Most importantly, they've kept Oakland out of the endzone and have made stops when they need them. The Hawks lead the time of possession battle 16:19 to Oakland's 13:41. Seattle has 11 first downs to Oakland's 9.

The Seahawks face the Raiders tonight and there will be many intriguing story lines to follow but I wanted to point out af few players I'll be watching closely. First of all, fifth round pick out of Appalachian State, safety Mark LeGree. LeGree was fairly obscure playing at Appalachian State coming into the Draft but once Seahawks fans saw his career numbers from there they were rightly excited. LeGree racked up 22 interceptions, which led the nation at the time he declared, and was known as a hard-hitting ballhawk type of player.

Some players take a little longer to develop than others but LeGree has been very quiet in this year's training camp and preseason. He is in a battle right now with former undrafted players Atari Bigby, Josh Pinkard, and Jeron Johnson for one or two spots on the 53-man roster, so LeGree needs to prove his fifth round worth. It's tough to say whether or not his spot on the roster is in danger, but he's been outshone a bit by the other safeties I mentioned. I'd love to see him make some big plays tonight.

Second, defensive end/defensive tackle Lazarius Levingston. "Pep" Levingston was a seventh round pick for the Seahawks in the Draft this year out of LSU, and has quietly had a pretty good preseason. He had two sacks last weekend against the Broncos and is making a case for the Seahawks retaining him on the 53-man roster. I'm hoping he can play strong on both the outside and on the interior as solid and versatile depth for the Hawks this year so I'll be watching him closely tonight.

Third -- DB Byron Maxwell. Maxwell was a sixth round pick for the Seahawks this season and has been a strong performer on special teams thus far. I'd keep an eye on #41 during kickoffs and punts, as he's been playing the gunner role quite well. I am hoping to see Maxwell make the team.

Finally, Malcolm Smith. The weakside linebacker chosen by the Seahawks in round seven out of USC has also had himself a pretty decent camp and preseason, and is one of those roster bubble guys that you would absolutely hate to see get cut. I'm hoping he puts on a performance tonight that doesn't give John Schneider and Pete Carroll a choice. Look for him to fly around and make tackles, and to drop back into coverage and hopefully break up some passes.

For the football starved masses that endured the NFL Lockout, even preseason games are fun to watch and I'm legitimately excited for tonight. First of all, the final roster battles are at their climax (get your mind out of the gutter) and players will be fighting for their football lives.

A few marquee Seahawks players are expected to sit Friday night as the Seahawks take on the Raiders.

The Seahawks host the Oakland Raiders tonight at 7:30PM and will do so without the services of a few key players. Though there has been no official announcement today on the team scratches for tonight's matchup, I can tell you that a few big names will sit out. Marshawn Lynch is still nursing a sore ankle and will not suit up. Justin Forsett and Leon Washington will look to split carries with the first team and Thomas Clayton and Vai Taua will pick up the slack later in the game.

Russell Okung practiced a bit this week but is expected to sit out as well. Tyler Polumbus is likely to get the start, and Will Robinson will back him up.

David Hawthorne will sit with a sore knee, with rookie K.J. Wright and veteran Matt McCoy taking his place. McCoy has been playing at the strongside linebacker spot mostly but will play a few snaps in the middle in nickel situations.

Past that, Mike WIlliams and Sidney Rice have both been banged up this week and have missed practices. Ben Obomanu missed practice as well after hitting his head and Isaiah Stanback has been sitting with a sore hamstring. It's likely these four receivers will not play, and the Seahawks signed WRs Patrick Williams, Chris Carter, and Owen Spencer this week to add some depth.

Kam Chancellor has been battling a foot injury and may sit. Probably for the best anyway, as Josh Pinkard, Atari Bigby, Jeron Johnson and Mark LeGree need to get some looks as they battle for a few remaining roster spots.

The Seattle Seahawks will play without running back Marshawn Lynch, linebacker David Hawthorne and offensive tackle Russell Okung for Friday's preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.

According to the Seattle Seahawks, running back Marshawn Lynch and linebacker David Hawthorne will not play in Friday's preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. Similarly, offensive tackle Russell Okung is close to returning from an ankle injury but will likely miss Friday's contest.

Lynch is dealing with an ankle injury of his own and will sit out of Saturday's game. The rest will give Lynch a full week before the start of the regular season, by which time Lynch figures to be suited up and ready to go.

Hawthorne has a knee injury and will forego Saturday's contest in favor of resting it. He started all 16 games last season and will look to be ont eh field as well during the Seahawks' season opener against the

Okung, meanwhile, injured his left ankle in the first series of the Seahawks' preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers. He left the field and has been working his way back ever since. Okung, who had a history of ankle problems last season, has spent the entire preseason working his ankle back into playing shape. He is close enough to returning, apparently, for Coach Pete Carroll to say this: "If (Friday) was the opener, he'd try to go this week."

The Seahawks will take on the Raiders on Friday at 7:30 PT.
