The season opener for the Washington Huskies is just three days away. While Eastern Washington should not present too much of a challenge to UW in week one, it would be nice to have their starting running back in time for the first game. That's assuming he is healthy, of course.

An official announcement could be made on Polk's status as the team wraps up a light practice on Friday, but do not be surprised if a game-time decision is ultimately made. Health will be the determining factor and one would have to assume Polk will be held out against EWU. There are much more important games this season and the running back will need to be healthy for those if the Huskies hope to win.

Desmond Trufant has a lot of confidence in both himself and his abilities. How could he not? With two brothers already in the NFL and two successful seasons at Washington under his belt, there is plenty of confidence to be had. The senior cornerback plans to use that confidence to his advantage in 2011, and that could mean good things for all parties involved.

Well, maybe not the rest of the teams in the new Pac-12, but that's probably the plan for Trufant.

A nice piece written by Gregg Bell of GoHuskies.com has the details. Here are the highlights:

Trufant arrived at UW from Tacoma, Wash., in 2009. That's when Richardson, benched at the time at the other corner spot, looked at Trufant and saw a confident freshman starter. Where did that come from?

From him listening to two older brothers who are now cornerbacks in the NFL: Marcus, with the Seattle Seahawks, and Isaiah of the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Just seeing Desmond come in with that confidence, telling himself `next play' if he got beat, that was a real eye-opener for me," senior Quinton Richardson said.

Everyone knows of little brothers trying to live up to their big brother's name. Apparently, it's even more so in Trufant's case.

This month, Trufant has been shutting down his own teammates, with thudding plays. Huskies are still talking about the shoulder slam the 6-foot, 184-pound Trufant put into Austin Seferian-Jenkins' chest during a mid-August practice. It was about the only time since the 6-6, 257-pound tight end enrolled in late March that anyone has been able to separate Seferian-Jenkins from a reception.

Wednesday, Trufant belted another camp star, Kevin Smith, to break up a catch at the sideline.

This is the kind of determination and play that is going to wreck havoc on the conference as the Huskies look to rebuild and move forward after the departure of Jake Locker and company.

Trufant started nine games and broke up eight passes as a true freshman in 2009.

But his confidence dipped along with his performance as a sophomore early last season. He now says he was neglecting the "little things" and got easily distracted from his task at hand.

That's where brother Marcus, a Pro Bowl cornerback for the Seahawks in the 2007 season, knows best.

"He's told me, `Get rid of the distractions. Don't care who's at the game, how good you are. Don't try to live up to the name. Just go out, play hard and have fun,'" Desmond said.

"Whenever I've done that, I've been successful. And whenever I worried about those types of things, that wasn't good. Those mistakes were necessary to get where I am now."

The best and most successful athletes are the ones capable of learning from their mistakes and improving from them. It sounds like Trufant is ready to make a big step forward in 2011. This has to get UW fans excited.

Nick Holt has been yelling a lot ever since he arrived in Seattle. It has a lot to do with the defensive line, which struggled to stop the run in any way. Here are the numbers through the first two years of Holt's tenure as defensive coordinator of the Huskies.

2009--4.51 yards per carry allowed (92nd in FBS), 148.83 yards allowed (64th in FBS)

2010--4.67 yards per carry allowed (tied for 93rd in FBS), 190.46 yards allowed (97th in FBS)

The Husky defense did stiffen up near the end of last season and play a little bit better down the stretch, but much more is needed if Washington is planning to truly contend against the traditional powers this season. Solving the problems on the line would be the first step in that direction.

Veteran Alameda Ta'amu hopes to be one part of the solution as the main interior defensive tackle. Young Danny Shelton, a true freshman, hopes to be the other part as the star DT of the future for the Huskies. Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times has more.

"I think it's going to be a lot better than it has been," defensive coordinator Nick Holt said after Wednesday's practice. "We finally have some big guys, some road-grader type guys, and it's really competitive, too. We have about four or five guys that are big that are competing for playing time."

The Huskies do have more defensive line depth to run a true 4-3, with Ta'amu at the three technique and Shelton likely handling nose guard duties. Sophomore Hau'oli Jamora will probably start at one defensive end slot; the DE/DT hybrid Everrette Thompson and Talia Crichton will likely be sharing the other spot. Behind Ta'amu and Shelton are young talents like Sione Potoa'e and Lawrence Lagafuiana, with Josh Shirley and Andrew Hudson right behind them. This is a unit that can man a solid two-deep, which means Washington could finally break through and have the run defense Holt has wanted since he got there.

Or they could just be too young again. It's still a toss-up at this point.

The Washington Huskies are gearing up for the start of the season, and their biggest question mark continues to be at quarterback. Keith Price is going to be one of those huge question marks going into the 2011 college football season, and it's natural. You can't replace Jake Locker and expect UW to find an instant remedy, like chicken noodle soup in the world's biggest bowl.

There's some video from after practice today about Steve Sarkisian discussing Price, courtesy of Mason Kelley of the Seattle Times.

Reporter: You talked a lot about the changes that Jake had to make coming into the new system. What changes did Keith have to make?

Sarkisian: I don't think he really had to change ... Keith is truly a blank slate...we really got a chance to mold him. To me, Keith has really grown up in this system ... This is all he knows. The fundamentals, the techniques, the calls ... he didn't have to relearn anything. There weren't words that meant something different in this system ... He wasn't forced to play right away so he could have some of those growing pains ... he didn't just get thrown out on the field on Saturdays where he had to learn through it.

It's nice for Husky fans to see that Price didn't have to adjust his game very much from his college days, and is well-accustomed to the system that Sarkisian runs in Washington. Locker had to adjust from one system to the next and was in a situation filled with flux.

Price should be able to handle the offense early on; the question is how well can he adapt when things went wrong. Locker was pretty good at making improvisations outside of the pocket. It remains to be seen whether Price can be just as good making decisions when plays get chaotic and the system breaks down.

There is also apparently a punting battle between Kiel Rasp and Will Mahan. I'm guessing it'll be resolved by the punter who keeps on hitting it the farthest the most consistently. Punting battles are exciting and terse!

Washington Huskies running back Chris Polk has undergone surgery to repair a torn knee meniscus. Not too much surrounding the injury had been released as of Thursday, but head coach Steve Sarkisian broke the silence and told the media of the injury.

Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reported the story over Twitter:

UW practice over. Sarkisian announces Chris Polk had arthroscopic knee surgery knee surgery to repair meniscus tear.

Says Polk may be out a couple weeks and could miss opener against Eastern. But says better to have surgery now than to let it linger.

Again, important to note Sarkisian doesn't think Polk will be out long.

Sark said that "I think he wil be back in no time.'' And that "for the long haul it was the right thing to do'' to have it done now.''

While the loss of Polk will be substantial as the team finishes up fall camp in preparation of the season, the good news is coach Sarkisian does not believe the team will be without the running back for more than a few weeks. More importantly, it sounds like it's a near-guarantee Polk will be healthy and available for the big showdown in Lincoln as the team takes on the Cornhuskers.

Meniscus tears are fairly common these days and they are typically an outpatient procedure. Brief rehab may be required, but nothing serious or strenuous would be demanded of Polk.

The Huskies fall camp is in full-swing as the team prepares for the upcoming season. There were quite a few questions on the roster coming into camp, though the fullback position is no longer one.

Jonathan Amosa, who switched to fullback after starting his career at linebacker, has impressed many during the summer months with a strong work ethic, has earned the starting job, according to Bob Condotta:

Fortunately for UW, walk-on Jonathan Amosa made the switch from linebacker in the spring and has continued to progress in the fall, looming as the starter at the spot now. The sudden abundance of tight ends means UW can get creative with its personnel and use some of those players in situations that might have been filled by fullbacks, mitigating the lack of experience at fullback. When UW does use a fullback this year, though, Amosa figures to be the guy.

As Condotta mentions, the future of the fullback position in UW's offense is somewhat in question, especially with a lot of turnover to come after last season, though Amosa will be the guy whenever needed. Whether it be to block, go out for a pass or smash the ball up the middle to gain a few yards remains to be seen.

Washington Huskies starting cornerback Quinton Richardson suffered a significant leg injury in Saturday's practice when he collided with freshman wide receiver Kasen Williams, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports. The good news is that head coach Steve Sarkisian doesn't believe it's a knee injury, which could have meant "end of season". The bad news is that broken bone isn't out of the question, which could mean "out for long period of time which might not be end of the season, but will suck anyway." The better case scenario would be high ankle sprain, which would mean he'd be out for only a limited period of time and should return sooner to the lineup

Richardson was supposed to team up with Desmond Trufaunt to provide a solid one-two combo at corner, so it was critically imperative that he stayed healthy.
