Throughout the day, Dave Villwock was in control of the fastest boat on Lake Washington in the 2011 Seafair Hydroplane Races, finishing first in each of his three heats, including a narrow win over Steve David in Heat 2B. In the finals, David and Villwock were set to tee it up again, with the Albert Lee Cup on the line in the Unlimited Hydroplane Series' premier event. It was widely assumed the finals would be a two-man race again.

As the boats prepared for the start, Villwock took outside of where he would've liked, with David on the inside. A clean start led to what we all assumed as the Oh Boy! Oberto boat and Spirit of Qatar boat battled it our over the first lap. As they crossed the line to end the first lap, David had the lead, followed by Villwock and the Valken.com boat in third.

David maintained his spot on the inside, with Villwock blocked out on the outside through two laps, allowing the Oh Boy! Oberto boat to pull away. Scott Liddycoat, in the Valken boat, battled it out with Villwock during the second lap, eventually forcing him outside and nabbing the second-place spot. Liddycoat continued to block Villwock out, frustrating the prolific driver as David pulled away.

As they came to the checkered flag, David took the win several boat-lengths, with Liddycoat in second and Villwock third. After a superb weekend of heats, Villwock's Seafair ended in disappointment as he couldn't close and was shut-out by the Valken.com boat.

Lake Washington giveth and Lake Wahington taketh away. For Kayleigh Perkins-Mallory, it's been an up-and-down weekend at Seafair, culminating in a wild crash during the Unlimited Lights Finals on Sunday afternoon. Earlier this weekend, Perkins-Mallory won an Unlimited Lights heat, with her brother, Brian, also winning a heat on Sunday. But in the finals, Perkins-Mallory was taken for a ride before landing upside-down in Lake Washington after her boat went airborne and cartwheeled around.

This wasn't Perkins-Mallory's first experience with bad luck on Lake Washington, though. Earlier this year, she was involved in one of the more memorable moments on the lake this year. The dramatic video below shows her boat catching fire and exploding as she scrambled to get free and get away from the boat.

Perkins-Mallory was able to walk away from both incidents without major injury. On Sunday afternoon at Seafair, she was pulled from her upside-down boat by rescuers and taken to shore for further observation. She was fine, however, and even waved to the cameras as she was coming off the water.

We'll be back with video of Perkins-Mallory's amazing crash as soon as it's available.
Dave Villwock had little to gain in heat 3B at the Seafair Hydroplane Races after already securing the maximum points in his first two trips around the course at Lake Washington. But that doesn't mean Villwock had any ideas of taking it easy. Instead, Villwock put the pedal to the floor, easily flying to the front and taking hold of the race on the first lap before calmly driving to the win, his third of the last two days.

Steve David started slow and decided to stay back from the pack, playing it safe with a spot in the final already secured. Instead of a rematch, David's Oh Boy Oberto machine died on the back-stretch as the boats were lining up for the start, forcing his hand and creating a situation where he had to back-off before the start. Still, David cruised to a third place finish, behind the Spirit of Qatar and the Graham Trucking boat.

Sunday has played-out about as expected, with Villwock dominating, David close behind and the rest of the field playing catch-up. For now, it looks as though Villwock has the boat to beat again, as his Spirit of Qatar machine is perfect on the weekend.

Heat 3A is up next at Seafair, after it was red-flagged due to a boat dead in the water.
Dave Villwock and Steve David battled side-by-side in heat 2B of the 2011 Seafair Hydroplane Races on Sunday morning, thrilling fans with a close race early-on. In what was billed as the race of the morning, David and Villwock were neck-and-neck throughout the race, with the Spirit of Qatar driver on the outside and the OBerto machine on the inside. As the two ran down to the wire, they pulled clear of the field, creating a two-man race.

It was a close, almost photo, finish in the second heat of the morning as Villwock's Spirit of Qatar boat showed its power on the front- and back-stretch. Villwock was forced wide on the turns, but more than made up for it on the straightaways, running David down and making up ground at a tremendous pace. As they came to the line, Villwock just barely grabbed the win, taking home the victory by a boat length or less.

In other action, Scott Liddycoat just barely edged Jeff Bernard in heat 2A, nipping him at the line by about a boat length. J. Michael Kelly and his Degree Men boat went dead in the water during the heat, as well, putting the team behind the eight-ball. With a did not finish as a result, Kelly has some serious work to do going forward.

Heat 3A is up next at Seafair, followed by a rematch between Villwock and David in heat 3B.
