The Seattle Mariners (37-35) came out on top in a three game weekend series against baseball's best team, the Philadelphia Phillies (45-28). In the rubber match between the two ball clubs on Sunday afternoon, Mariners starter Jason Vargas pitched a complete game shut out to lead the Mariners over the Phillies 2-0.

Both teams remained in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the sixth inning when Justin Smoak hit a bloop single off of Cole Hamels to left field that scored Ichiro from second base. The Mariners added on one more run in the seventh inning. After a Dustin Ackley triple, Adam Kennedy pinch-hit for Mike Carp and singled to left field to score Ackley from third.

Jason Vargas was brilliant for the Mariners. The left-hander retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced in the game and only allowed three hits. Vargas notched his second complete game shut out of the season.

Ichiro went 2-4 and extended his hit-streak to eight games.

The Mariners (36-35) were unable to come up with sufficient offense to support their ace, Felix Hernandez in Saturday night's game at Safeco Field against the Philadelphia Phillies (45-27). Center Fielder Shane Victorino played hero for the Phillies, driving in four of their five runs en route to a 5-1 victory.

In his second major league start, Dustin Ackley hit his first career major league home run into the right field seats in the bottom of the second inning. Ackley's solo shot tied the game at 1-1, but the Mariners did not muster any other offense for the rest of the game.

The home run allowed by Phillies starter Vance Worley was the only run he and the rest of the Phillies bullpen would allow to the Mariners all night.

Victorino broke the game open in the seventh inning with a two-run ground-rule double off Hernandez that gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead. Hernandez put up a respectable performance, striking out five and walking two in eight innings of work.

In the the top of the ninth, Victorino hit his eighth home run of the season to secure a 5-1 victory for the Phillies.
