After hours to digest what happened when Aaron Rome collided with Nathan Horton as the two were entering the Boston Bruins offensive zone during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, it's clear just how dirty the hit was. Horton had gotten rid of the puck and was skating up ice when Rome caught him from the blindside, left his feet and left Horton unconscious on the ice. Horton was leveled, but in no way was it a clean hit or "just part of the game."

The video of the hit below illustrates just how bad it was. Yes, Horton had his head down, but the puck was well-gone and Rome leaves his feet after sizing him up. The hush that came over the crowd was eerie and it left a bad taste in the mouths of many.

If there were ever a hit that was a picture of suspension-worthy, this is it. We can hide behind the guise of hockey being a rough sport and a man's game, but Rome's hit was above and beyond the typical checks that occur. It was dirty, and very clearly so. He laid-out a defenseless opponent and poured more fuel on a series that was already boiling over.

And, most importantly, he sent a man to the hospital and may have ended his season. Concussions are serious business and in a situation like this, when a head could've been easily prevented, it's senseless. I love hits as much as the next guy, but this was not a hit that should ever be praise, and it should only be condemned.

The NHL will take action on Tuesday, and it's likely Rome will be suspended -- perhaps for a significant amount of time. In a series that's already bordering on out-of-control, it's at the point that the NHL's hand has been forced after Rome put Horton in the hospital. While it was fun to make fun of Alex Burrows antics and the back-and-forth between the Bruins and Canucks, this is far more serious, and action needs to be taken.

The good news for the Vancouver Canucks is that they've avoided the shutout. The bad news, however, is that the Boston Bruins tacked on four more goals for the 8-1 win. After a scoreless first period, the Bruins struck early and often in the second, scoring 11 seconds in and adding three more to take a 4-0 lead. And in the third, the hits kept coming for Boston as the Bruins added another four more in between bedlam and a slew of penalties.

With the game out of hand, the fights and shoving matches began, creating a penalty list that reads more like a roster in the third period. Ryan Kesler, Milan Lucic, Dennis Seidenberg, Alex Burrows, Daniel Sedin and Shawn Thornton were each given 10-minute misconducts for multiple incidents in a game that began chippy and got worse after NNathan Horton was sent to the hospital following a blindside hit by Aaron Rome. Horton was reportedly alert and moving his extremities at Massachusetts General Hospital at last check.

Daniel Paille found the net first for the Bruins, scoring a short-handed goal assisted by Johnny Boychuk. Jannik Hansen answered two minutes later, breaking the shutout for the Canucks. It woke up the beast again, though, and Boston unleashed an onslaught to end the game.

Mark Recchi scored his second goal of the game just four minutes later to push the score to 6-1 in favor of the Bruins. Just 30 seconds after Recchi's goal, Chris Kelly found the back of the net and the rout was complete. Michael Ryder finished it off with goal number eight, and the third goal in as many shots.

After two tough games and close losses to the Canucks, Boston released its frustration in a big way, completely dominating Vancouver in Game. Heading into Game 4, the Boston Bruins are alive and well after an 8-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver still leads the series, 2-1, but Boston sent a message on Monday night.

It's been a theme in the Stanley Cup Finals, but needs to be said again: Tim Thomas is an absolute brick wall. Though the Boston Bruins did concede three goals in Game 2, Thomas has weathered the onslaught of shots from the Vancouver Canucks potent offense throughout the series and almost single-handedly kept his team in games. The same holds true in Game 3 as Thomas has stone-walled the Canucks to the tune of 35 saves.

The Bruins did their damage in the second period, scoring four answered goals after Nathan Horton was knocked cold by Aaron Rome. Since then, Boston has found a rhythm on the offensive end, scoring twice at even-strength, once on a power play and once short-handed. With Thomas in net, the 4-0 lead appears to be safe, despite a bevy of shots directed at the Boston net.

On the other side, Roberto Luongo has 23 saves, but also conceded the four second period goals. Boston was efficient in the second, finding the net four times on 13 shots to take the commanding lead. Thomas also was credited with a hit, which may serve as a feather in his cap in a game that's already well in hand, it seem.

Shawn Thornton was given a game misconduct with 12:02 to go after a skirmish in front of the net following another Tim Thomas save. At this point in the game, with tensions high and Boston well in control, the referees are clamping down to ensure order going forward.

Just about halfway through the third period, the Boston Bruins lead the Vancouver Canucks in Game 3, 4-0.

Nathan Horton was leveled by an Aaron Rome hit widely deemed as dirty during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday night in Boston. After taking a blindside check and landing almost squarely on his head, Horton stayed motionless as his arms went completely rigid -- a sure sign of a concussion. Trainers kept him on the ice, worked to stabilize him and, after a few minutes, took him off the ice on a stretcher in front of a stunned crowd in Boston. You can find a gif of the hit here.

But there is good news: Horton was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and has feeling in his extremities, according to a tweet from the Bruins. He was also able to exhibit movement in his extremities as medical personnel worked on him. While there's been no further diagnosis, the update is encouraging, though it seems clear Horton is dealing with a concussion.

Rome was ejected for the hit, which was called as a five-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct. It's incredibly likely he'll face a suspension for the hit, which came from the blindside after Horton had gotten rid of the puck.

We'll keep you updated on Horton's status as more becomes available. The Canucks trail the Bruins heading into the period, 4-0.

After two games with borderline anemic offense, save for a two minute spurt in Game 2, the Boston Bruins have come alive, and have the Vancouver Canucks on the ropes in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Boston is on fire in the second period, holding a 4-0 lead with just about four minutes to go in the frame. And the Bruins have done it in every way, scoring two full-strength goals, one on a power play and one more shorthanded.

Andrew Ference got the scoring started just 11 seconds into the second period. If you'll remember, Alex Burrows found the back of the net just 11 seconds into overtime in Game 2 to give the Canucks a 3-2 win and 2-0 series lead. Four minutes later, Mark Recchi added a second goal, scoring on a power play after Jeff Tambellini was sent to the box for hooking.

Finally, Brad Marchand broke free on a penalty kill, faking Roberto Luongo and going top-shelf to give the Bruins a commanding 3-0 lead. Recchi added a second, again going high and to Luongo's glove side just a few minutes later to add a fourth goal on 13 shots in the second period. Suddenly, the Bruins are alive, and have a chance to steal a game back from a Vancouver team that's been nearly unstoppable over the first two games in the series.

With time winding down in the second period, the Boston Bruins lead the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0.

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals got off to a scary start as Nathan Horton was leveled after releasing the puck on the edge of the offensive zone. Aaron Rome caught Horton flush while blindsiding him, leaving the Boston Bruins' winger lying motionless on the ice for several minutes. Horton was taken off on a stretcher and Rome was ejected to go along with the major he received for the hit.

Here is the hit, courtesy of Bubba Prog. Note that Horton is not looking and Rome has him sized up for the monster hit after he releases the puck (click to animate).

I understand the series is chippy and the hits have continued to come at a furious pace. But Rome's hit was dirty and dangerous, and it has no place in the game. Nobody wants to see a player carried off the ice on the stretcher, no matter the magnitude of the game or rivalry. And though the Bruins and Canucks clearly have gotten under each other skin during the Stanley Cup Finals, this is going to far.

Look for the NHL to keep a close eye on the series and examine the above hit closely after the game. Rome should be suspended for at least a game, if not more. The hit was reckless, unnecessary and has no place in hockey, especially at this level.

We'll be back with more on the hit and Horton's injury in our Stanley Cup Finals StoryStream.
The Vancouver Canucks are in firm control of the Stanley Cup Finals and have a chance to all but end it on Monday night as they battle the Boston Bruins in Game 3 at TD Garden Arena. The Canucks were clutch in the first two games, scoring the game-winner with 18.5 seconds to go in the first game and downing the Bruins just 11 seconds into the overtime frame on Saturday to secure the Game 3 win. The series heads to Boston for Game 3 and Game 4, and Vancouver smells blood in the water.

Here's a look at the relevant information for Monday's matchup.

Previews: Get settled in ahead of Game 3 with a little reading to get caught up on all the happenings. Alex Burrows has been the instigator in the Stanley Cup Finals thus far, and we took a look at his role. SB Nation also has its StoryStream for Game 3 and will be covering all the angles. Nucks Misconduct has the Canucks' slant, as always.

Start time: There's something to be said about consistency and the NHL copied and pasted the start times across the board in the Stanley Cup Finals. Monday's game will start at the same time as the first two: 5 p.m. here on the West Coast. At this point, we should be sufficiently programmed.

Broadcast information: After two games on NBC, we probably felt a little spoiled by the wall-to-wall NHL coverage. On Monday, we're brought back down to Earth as Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals is banished to Versus. Sadly, it's back to cable TV as NBC sits vacant, playing re-runs of game shows instead. In Seattle, you can also find Game 3 on CBUT, if coverage from our Canadian friends is your thing.
