The Mariners (31-30) offense went silent in a 5-1 loss against the Chicago White Sox (29-33) at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night. After blowing up for 26 runs in a weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Mariners have only managed to score two runs in two games so far against the Chicago White Sox.

While the Mariners offense did struggle against White Sox starter Philip Humber, Felix Hernandez was not at his top form either. Chicago got on the board early with a Paul Konerko solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Then, in the third inning, Omar Vizquel tripled to right field to drive in two White Sox runners. After the triple, Carlos Quentin hit a two-run home run in the same inning and extended the White Sox lead to 5-1.

Despite the struggles early, Eric Wedge kept Felix Hernandez in until the seventh inning. Hernandez did not allow a run for the rest of the game, but the White Sox offense got enough work done early. The five earned runs given up was the most Hernandez has surrendered in a game all season.

Humber was masterful in 7.2 innings of work. He surrendered only one run over five hits and three walks. Miguel Olivo drove in the only Mariners run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning to score Adam Kennedy from third.

After a successful 7-3 home stand, the Mariners (31-28) head out on the road this week for a three game series against the Chicago White Sox (28-33) and a four game set against the Detroit Tigers (31-27). Despite the Mariners having won six straight series, they are still 2.5 games behind the first place Texas Rangers (34-26) who have won five straight and are currently the hottest team in baseball.

The Mariners send out Michael Pineda (6-2 2.30 ERA) for game one Monday night against the White Sox. Pineda is coming off a solid performance against the Baltimore Orioles last week. He struck out seven and only allowed one earned run in seven innings of work. Opposing batters this season are managing to hit only .196 against the rookie.

Getting the start for the Chicago White Sox is John Danks (0-8 5.25). Danks has struggled mightily this season. In his last start he only lasted four innings, giving up nine earned runs over nine hits.
