Seeing Chris Gimenez in the Seattle Mariners lineup on Tuesday night raised some eyebrows as reporters began to wonder why Justin Smoak, the team's best hitter by far this year, was nowhere to be found. Smoak had just taken a day off last Friday and showed no signs of injury before mysteriously disappearing from the lineup on Tuesday as Eric Wedge shuffled his batting order again. Adding to the intrigue, Carlos Peguero, a 25-year-old outfielder from the Tacoma Rainiers, was spotted in the clubhouse as it appeared the Mariners had made a move following Monday's game.

Shortly thereafter, the Mariners announced Smoak was headed to the bereavement list to take care of a family issue and Peguero had been recalled in his place. The news came from Kirby Arnold on Twitter.

No word on what Smoak is dealing with, but the bereavement list allows him to take a three- to seven-day leave to take care of matters. Peguero is an intriguing prospect, though he joins a crowded pile of outfielders on the Mariners' roster and may not see much more than sporadic, situational duties during his short stint with the team.

We'll have more on Smoak's absence and Peguero's callup as it becomes available in this StoryStream. For more on the Mariners, head over to Lookout Landing.
