All four NFC West teams were in action on Sunday in inter-divisional play. The rankings underwent a bit of a shake-up, but not as much as they could have, considering the results of the day. The top 2 teams in the division — the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals — both lost yesterday, leaving the door wide open.

The Seattle Seahawks went to the Bay Area to take on the Oakland Raiders and left with a solid whipping. The Raiders used a strong effort by the defense to shut down Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawks en route to a 33-3 win. Jason Campbell threw for over 300 yards and Darrius Heyward-Bey had a monster receiving day.

The St. Louis Rams, on the back of a win over the Carolina Panthers, moved to 4-4 and into second place in the NFC West, one game behind the Seattle Seahawks. Sam Bradford continues to mature every game, throwing for 191 yards and two touchdowns while limiting his mistakes. The Rams, a surprise in the NFC West this year, have a bye next week.

The Arizona Cardinals had too many costly turnovers and let a familiar face in the Northwest — former Oregon Duck Legarrette Blount — run all over them in a 38-35 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Max Hall threw two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns, before he was replaced by Derek Anderson, who also threw two interception.

The San Fransisco 49ers also pulled out a win in London yesterday, finally moving past one win and beginning their slow climb out of the basement. Frank Gore had over 100 yards on the ground and Michael Crabtree added the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. The Niners, like the Cardinals, are on a bye next week.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have found their starting running back in a win over the Arizona Cardinals today. Arizona quarterback Max Hall tried to hand the game over to the Bucs with two interception returns for touchdowns in the first half. Head coach Ken Wisenhunt made the wise decision to insert Derek Anderson shortly thereafter, but it was too little, too late for the Cardinals.

LeGarrette Blount, an undrafted free agent, made the most of an ever-increasing workload, carrying the ball 22 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Blount has worked his way up the depth chart and appears to be firmly planted as the feature back in Tampa Bay. Quarterback Josh Freeman added 278 yards and a score, finding Mike Williams four times for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Anderson fared better than Hall in the yardage department, but still threw two costly interceptions. After replacing Hall, Anderson completed 16 of 24 passes for 278 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Hall was 8 of 16 for 71 yards, with a touchdown and those two pick-sixes. Beanie Wells added 16 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals. Steven Breaston led all receivers with 148 yards on the day. Larry Fitzgerald added 72 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cardinals failed to capitalize on the Seattle Seahawks’ misstep today, falling to 3-4 and into a tie with the St. Louis Rams for second place in the NFC West. The Buccaneers improved to 5-2. Arizona travels to Minnesota next week to take on the Vikings while Tampa Bay heads to Atlanta to meet the Falcons.

The Seattle Seahawks would’ve been better not showing up in Oakland today — and metaphorically they didn’t. The Hawks walked out of the Bay Area battered, bruised and with another loss on the record, falling to the Raiders 33-3. The Seahawk offense hung the defense out to dry, never sustaining drives long enough to give the defense any kind of rest. Seattle was 1-16 on third down, failing to convert until the fourth quarter. In fact, it took the Seahawks until just before halftime to finally get a first down.

The offensive line was a huge problem for the Seahawks all day. When Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck wasn’t being sacked, he had a defender in his face. There were no holes for the running backs and little was working. When Hasselbeck did have time, he was anything but spectacular.

Hasselbeck had a cringe-worthy day, completing 13 of 32 passes for 160 yards and one interception. The run game wasn’t any better, gaining only 47 total yards on the day. Leon Washington paced the Hawks, gaining 29 yards on five carries.

Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell may not have been pretty, but he was effective. Campbell completed just over 50 percent of his passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Darren McFadden added 110 yards on 21 carries. Darrius Heyward-Bey, one of the few healthy Raider receivers, caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The game was filled with injuries on both sides of the ball. Oakland shut-down corner Nnamdi Asomugha left the game in the fourth quarter with what looked to be a gruesome ankle injury. X-rays were negative and Asomugha was optimistic about his chances of starting. Seattle defensive end Red Bryant also went down with what looked to be a serious knee injury. Numerous other players on both teams came out of the game banged up or hobbled throughout the game.

The Seahawks fall to 4-3 and are still atop the NFC West. The Raiders, a surprise in the AFC West, improve to 4-4. Seattle returns home to take on the New York Giants next week. The Raiders host the Kansas City Chiefs in a battle between the top two teams in the AFC West.

The San Franscico 49ers travelled to London and found themselves in a dog-fight with the Denver Broncos this morning. In a back and forth game, Michael Crabtree caught the go ahead strike, a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Troy Smith, to put the 49ers up 17-10. Frank Gore tacked on another touchdown after the San Fransisco defense stripped Denver quarterback Kyle Orton on a scramble. That insurance was needed after Orton hit Brandon Lloyd for a score on the next possession. The Broncos missed the extra point.

The Broncos forced the 49ers to punt on the next possession, with under two minutes to go, but an Eddie Royal punt return for a touchdown was called back after a penalty. The 78-yard return had the chance to tie the game, but the Broncos instead were backed up to the 19-yard line. Denver put a drive together, but San Fransisco intercepted an Orton pass with under a minute to go to seal the game, leaving us with a 24-16 final.

Smith, filling in for the injured Alex Smith, threw for 196 yards and a touchdown. Frank Gore carried the ball 29 times for 118 yards and a touchdown. Delanie Walker caught five passes for 85 yards and Crabtree added three catches for 53 yards and one touchdown.

Orton put up plenty of yards, passing for 369 yards one touchdown and an interception. Knowshon Moreno carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards. Brandon Lloyd led all receivers with 169 yards and a touchdown. Tim Tebow found the end zone on a quarterback dive from the one, stealing a touchdown after Lloyd was stopped at the one yard line.

The Broncos fall to 2-6 on the year while the 49ers improve to 2-6, still failing to meet preseason expectations. Both teams are on a bye next week.

The St. Louis Rams continue to surpise this year, this time putting together a dominating performance against the Carolina Panthers. The Rams, behind a stout defense, held the Panthers to 10 points, seven of which came on a late touchdown pass. Sam Bradford put together a solid day, throwing for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, the Rams had a tough go of it against Carolina. Steven Jackson carried the ball 23 times for 59 yards, but didn't get into the end zone. Washington State graduate Brandon Gibson led the Rams' receivers, catching six balls for 67 yards. Danny Amendola also caught a touchdown pass.

Matt Moore gave St. Louis plenty of help, throwing for 194 yards, one touchdown, but three interceptions. Jonathon Stewart never got it going on the ground, gaining only 30 yards. Steve Smith led all receivers with 85 yards. Brandon LaFell added a late score for the Panthers

The Rams move to 4-4 and sit at third in the NFC West for now. The Carolina Panthers fall to 1-6. St. Louis takes next week off to rest while Carolina hosts the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints.
