There might be two ways to look at Gonzaga's 90-58 win against Southern Oregon last night.

On the one hand, it's an exhibition and the most you can do is look for chemistry and perhaps how well conditioned players are, as described by Zach Bell of the Slipper Still Fits.

The Slipper Still Fits - For Gonzaga Bulldogs Fans
The first thing that jumped out to me was the frontcourt. I don't really care to discuss their post moves and interior scoring because Southern Oregon was obviously outmatched but I absolutely love their ability to run the court. Kelly Olynyk and Sam Dower have built a great chemistry on the court and I hope they see a lot of time together. Both can run, both showed confidence passing in traffic, and they can really stretch the court.

On the other hand, an old problem was present during the game that Mark Few would undoubtedly like to fix: Gonzaga finished with 17 turnovers, including 12 in the first half.

Five reach double figures in GU win - Jim Meehan
GU was turnover-free most of the second half before finishing with four turnovers in the final six minutes. It hardly mattered on the scoreboard as the Bulldogs overwhelmed the NAIA visitors from Ashland. GU led 44-24 at intermission and by as many as 39 in the second half.

"He (head coach Mark Few) just flat-out told us (at half) we can’t turn the ball over like that," senior guard Steven Gray said. "We have to clean things up with our feet and not force passes into the post. Just make simpler plays."

First game jitters and playing without star Elias Harris could certainly have contributed to the turnover problem, but the source of the turnovers - forcing passes into the post, positioning - are things that Few is likely to want to improve before their non-conference schedule begins. Turnovers were their biggest statistical weakness during non-conference play last season, so it's definitely something to keep an eye on as they transition to a new starting point guard.

I'm pleased to hear that Elias Harris will be siting out the game to rest his shoulder, and to be completely honest, I would prefer that guys like Steven Gray, Rob Sacre and Mangisto Arop didn't play either. Unlike the scrimmage against Texas, this game will do nothing to sure up the rotation or prove which guys are capable of contributing in the rotation this season. In fact, if it were up to me, Gonzaga would be playing a second scrimmage instead of hosting Southern Oregon in this exhibition game. However, I understand that the chance to play in a front of a sell-out crowd at the MAC means more money and exposure for the program.

The game will take place at 6 pm at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The expectations are only increasing for the Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball team as the season nears.

Although we've probably come to expect them to be the WCC favorite by now.

As described previously, Gonzaga fans are excited about their team's prospects for the season.

Gonzaga Basketball Preview: What Will It Take To Meet Lofty Expectations? - SB Nation Seattle
With the transition from the unlikely "Cinderella" to a program with a consistent place on the national stage, people are starting to wonder if this will be the Bulldogs' breakthrough year that will see them make the Final Four for the first time in school history.

Yet after losing senior leader and point guard Matt Bouldin, there's plenty of uncertainty in Spokane. There's little question that the team will be good, but how good can they become?

One of the primary questions has to be about the point guard position, which Demetri Goodson presumably has the inside track on. The Slipper Still Fits added some additional insight on the point guard battle this morning.

2010-11 Player Previews: Consistency is key for Demetri Goodson - The Slipper Still Fits
There is no doubting that most Gonzaga fans will have Meech under a big microscope. With junior college guard Marquise Carter now in the fold, many believe he is the answer. Personally, I can't wait to see what Meech brings to the table. Like last season, it will not be a bed of roses but his defensive intensity and overall hustle plays make him fun to watch. If he can play with more control on offense and develop confidence in his outside jumper, there truly will be no ceiling for Meech.

After losing to Syracuse University in the second round of last season's NCAA tournament, expectations are high among Gonzaga fans heading into the 2010-11 season.

Over at the Slipper Still Fits, Zach Bell already has his sights set on the Elite Eight.

What is "success" for the 2010-11 Gonzaga Bulldogs? - The Slipper Still Fits
My current expectation for this team is to make it to the Elite 8. Gonzaga has a pair of bonafide stars in Elias Harris and Steven Gray. These two should be the unequivocal offensive leaders on this team. Combine that with a solid supporting cast of Robert Sacre, Kelly Olynyk, Manny Arop, Meech Goodson etc...it becomes a dangerous team to handle. Something that has plagued GU in the past is that there were too many people craving points and limelight. I don't see that with this team.

Bell's Elite Eight expectations are not necessarily an isolated instance of unrealistic homerism - ESPN's Andy Katz might have similar expectations.

Daily Word: Andy Katz's preseason top 25 - ESPN
9. Gonzaga: The Zags had quite a summer with Elias Harris, Kelly Olynyk and Robert Sacre all playing for their respective national teams. Gonzaga put together arguably the toughest nonconference schedule in the country, too. If Demetri Goodson and Steven Gray can elevate their game as lead guards after the departure of Matt Bouldin, the Zags will be deserving of a top-10 ranking.

A large part of the reason for the excitement about Gonzaga is that they're returning four of five starters and looking to build on last season's shared success in the regular season.

Canada Basketball | GONZAGA BASKETBALL SEASON BEGINS WITH 'KRAZINESS IN THE KENNEL'
Four starters from last year's 23-7 team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament - the Bulldogs 12th straight trip to March Madness - return for 12th-year head coach Mark Few.

The lone senior on this year's team is Steven Gray, who has shed his familiar uniform number 32 for number 41 this season. He averaged 13.6 points per game last season, one of two returning starters who averaged in double figures a year ago.

Junior centre Robert Sacre and junior guard Demetri Goodson are the other returning upperclassmen starters. Goodson averaged 6.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg and 1.8 assists per game. Sacre, up to 260 pounds on his 7-0 frame, averaged 10.3 ppg and 5.4 rebounds per game last season.

"I'm excited for this upcoming season," Sacre told KREM-TV.

But the individual drawing the most buzz is 6-foot-8 forward Elias Harris, who Bell clearly has high expectations for.

Good morning, Gonzaga basketball 2010-11 - The Slipper Still Fits
Elias Harris. Personally, Elias is as much fun to watch as Adam Morrison was at Gonzaga. A player with unlimited offensive potential, I can't wait to see Harris at McCarthey again.

It would be perfectly reasonable to look at this team with one senior and enormous potential and say that we should wait for a big breakthrough next year. But as Seth Davis of SI.com notes, Butler's miracle run last season reminds us that a breakthrough often occurs when we're not expecting it...hence why it's considered a breakthrough.

Ten burning questions for 2010-11 college basketball season - Seth Davis - SI.com
...it's fair to wonder when the Zags are going to pull off a similar breakthrough and get to the Final Four. Lots of high-major coaches have gone through the knocking-at-the-door-but-haven't-broken-through crucible, and while some never get there (Norm Stewart and Gene Keady, to name a couple), the ones who do usually reach the Final Four in a season when they're least expected.
