Earlier we noted a DraftExpress scouting report of University of Washington point guard Abdul Gaddy that was quite harsh in its assessment. According to a report from Percy Allen of the Seattle Times, DraftExpress's Jonathan Givony wasn't the only person who wanted to see more from Gaddy in his freshman season. Indeed, University of Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar says in an interview with Allen that Gaddy hasn't secured the starting point guard job yet.

The Washington coach identified three starters (co-captains Justin Holiday and Isaiah Thomas and senior Matthew Bryan-Amaning) and said sophomore point guard Abdul Gaddy hasn't secured a spot with the first unit.

Gaddy started 29 of 36 games last season and appears as if he'll need to compete with senior Venoy Overton, an all-Pac-10 Defensive team pick, for the job. Overton had been a starter when the 2009-10 season began, however, he seemed to thrive when he went to the bench after eight starts.

Asked directly about the starting point guard position, Romar told Allen, "It's a new year. It's a new year and we got guys that are going to compete for it."

Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com published a scouting report update on University of Washington point guard Abdul Gaddy, and the results were not pretty.

Gaddy, a high school teammate of one-and-done Texas guard and Boston Celtic draft pick Avery Bradley, was a highly-regarded naitonal prospect and big time recruiting get for Lorenzo Romar after he decommitted from the University of Arizona.

Givony's report doesn't mince words: Gaddy, a Bellarmine graduate from Tacoma, Washington, has a lot to work on if he hopes to join Bradley in the NBA.

Besides his pedigree and obvious youth, it's very difficult to find too many positive things to say about Gaddy's first year in college, as he struggled in every facet of the game and ended up ranking as the least productive prospect in all of college basketball, by a fairly large margin.

As a shot-creator, Gaddy struggled badly last season. His average first step hampers his slashing ability considerably going up against good defenders, resulting in him coughing the ball up on 33% of his possessions, second worst amongst all NCAA prospects last season.

He must also learn how to operate more efficiently and assertively with fewer dribbles than he was accustomed to in high school, something that was painfully obvious at times last season.

Givony does point out that Gaddy does still have one thing going for himself: his age. At 18, Gaddy is a young sophomore and has plenty of development time left in his college career.
