Former Mariner Jeff Clement designated for assignment by Pirates

The Mariners' former No. 3 pick was released by the Pirates today. The players Seattle could have drafted instead will make your head hurt.

The Pittsburgh Pirates designated Jeff Clement for assignment on Thursday, possibly ending what has been a very disappointing baseball career. The Seattle Mariners originally drafted Clement with the third overall pick of the 2005 Draft.

He was able to hit pretty well in the minors, but his game never really translated to the bigs. The Pirates took a chance on him in 2009, although he struggled when given a chance to play sparingly. He will now look for a new team to play for in 2013 unless he accepts a Minor League assignment with Pittsburgh.

If you're a Mariners fan with a weak stomach, it's probably a good idea to stop reading now. Here are some of the players taken in the first round after Clement in 2005: Ryan Zimmerman, Ryan Braun, Ricky Romero, Troy Tulowitzki, Cameron Maybin, Andrew McCutchen, Jay Bruce and Jacoby Ellsbury.

How different could things be in Seattle if Braun, Zimmerman or McCutchen were playing at Safeco Field on a nightly basis?
