No. 2 Eastern Washington had a tough test over the weekend, needing to hold Wagner scoreless in the fourth quarter and scoring a touchdown of their own to advance to the 2012 FCS Tournament's quarterfinal round.
Wagner, which earned the right to play Eastern Washington after topping Colgate last weekend, gave the Eagles a tough test, but EWU survived. The Eagles will square off with Illinois State next weekend for a shot at a semifinal bid.
Illinois State advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Appalachian State, 38-37, in a thrilling round of 16 meeting between the two schools.
Elsewhere in the bracket, favorites advanced as top-ranked North Dakota State bested border rival South Dakota State to advance to the quarterfinals. No. 3 Montana State had a little trouble with Stony Brook, but like Old Dominion and No. 5 Georgia Southern, advanced to the quarterfinals as well. ODU and Georgia Southern will square off in a quarterfinal meeting next weekend.
