The United States now seems to be in control of their own destiny when it comes to winning the overall Olympic medal count. The USA now has two more gold medals and ten more medals in the current count than China, and unless America starts losing some big events these next few days, it's unlikely that China will be able to catch up with them.
In terms of local Pacific Northwest athletes, Hope Solo helped make some critical saves to lift the United States to victory over Japan 2-1 in the gold medal match; it's Solo's second straight gold medal. In the Olympic decathlon, Ashton Eaton rolled to victory in the decathlon with 8,869 points, helping the University of Oregon win their first gold medal at these Olympics. With some good events like track and basketball still up for grabs, the USA is in good shape to win the overall medal count.
Here's the current medal count for the top five countries.
- United States, 90 (39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze)
- China, 80 (37, 24, 19)
- Russia, 56 (12, 21, 23)
- Great Britain, 52 (25, 13, 14)
- Germany, 37 (10, 16, 11)
