Olympic Decathlon Results: Ashton Eaton Fastest 100M Time, Best Long Jump

The early results are in on Ashton Eaton's bid for gold. The Portland, Oregon resident and University of Oregon graduate did very well to start things off and take an early lead after two events.

Eaton started by posting the fastest 100 meter time of any of the qualifiers. Eaton managed a time of 10.35 seconds, which is an Olympic best. Eaton grabbed 1011 points to take a 17 point lead over his US teammate Trey Hardee.

Eaton moved onto the long jump, where he soared even further ahead of the field. On his final jump, Eaton notched a mark of 8.03 meters, and was the only one who came close to knocking eight meters out of any of the decathletes. Eaton piled up another 1068 points from this event and proved why he's the prohibitive favorite for gold, as he leads by 143 points through two events going into the long jump later today.
