2012 London Olympics Medal Count: China Extends Lead Over U.S.

The United States had a strong showing on the track, adding four medals to its grand total in the afternoon, but the Chinese medal making machine picked up its pace as China won nine medals on the day to lead all nations.

Leo Manzano had the biggest win for the Americans as he took silver in the men's 1,500-meters. No American has medaled in the event since 1968. On the track podium he was joined by Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells who won silver and bronze, respectively, in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Erik Kynard has a silver weight wrapped around his neck for the men's high jump.

The U.S. is going to have to have a strong medal showing pretty soon if they wish to keep pace with China.

The Top 5 Medal Breakdown:

1. China - 73 (34 gold, 21 silver, 18 bronze)
