Team USA Medal Count: America Is The Best ... For Now

After Saturday, the United States is right where they want to be in terms of medal count -- right at the top. They have the slimmest possible lead on China in both total medals and gold medals, although the U.S. will certainly want to increase that lead as the swimming competitions wind down and track and field heats up.

Michael Phelps added one last gold medal to his trophy case as he helped the United States push ahead of China in gold medals and total medals. The United States now has 54 total medals and 26 gold, against the respective 53 and 25 of China.

Here are the total medal leaders at the end of Saturday's events:

1. United States - 54 (26, 13, 15)
2. China - 53 (25, 16, 12)
3. Great Britain - 29 (14, 7, 8)
4. Russia - 28 (3, 15, 10)
5. Japan - 24 (2, 10, 12)
