2012 Olympics Medal Count Update: Team USA Takes Lead Over China

The United States has been in second place for just about all of the 2012 Olympics up until Thursday, but that changed following a very strong showing this afternoon and evening in London. The US now leads all countries in the overall medal count with 37. Of those 37 medals, 18 are gold, nine are silver and 10 are bronze.

China has been the leader in London this week, but they finally lost their top spot. They also have won 18 gold medals, along with 11 silver and five bronze. Japan sits in third place with 19 medals, 11 of which are bronze. Germany and Russia are tied for fourth with 17 medals each.

Check out SI's complete medal tracker here. That will keep you updated throughout August on every country participating in London.
