Michael Phelps took home his first individual gold medal of the 2012 Olympics on Thursday, edging fellow American swimmer Ryan Lochte in the 200m IM finals. Phelps led the entire way and closed out very well, finishing the race in 1:54.27. It was the 16th gold medal of Phelps' career.
Lochte finished in second and took home the silver medal. He had raced in a different qualifying event about 20 minutes prior to the 200m IM, so fatigue had to be a factor for him. Lochte touched the wall in 1:54.90.
Laszlo Cseh of Hungary won bronze after placing third. He finished in 1:56.22, nearly two full seconds behind Phelps.
As for the rest of the day, Phelps will have one more qualifying event for the 100m Butterfly.
