Not to be outdone by its prominent West Coast neighbors in California and Oregon, the state of Washington came away with plenty of hardware at the 2012 London Olympics.
Swimming turned out to be the marquee event of the London games, and Bremerton native Nathan Adrian headlined the gifted group after bringing home Gold medals in both the men's 100m freestyle and the 4x100m medley relay. He added a Silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Also of note in the team sports was U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo, who hails from Richland, capturing gold along with her teammates against Japan in a 2011 Women's World Cup final rematch.
Courtney Thompson of Kent won a silver medal with the women's indoor volleyball team.
Other Washingtonian Olympic medal winners are as follows:
Marti Malloy, Oak Harbor: Bronze, judo, women's 57 kg
Adrienne Martelli, University Place: Bronze, rowing, women’s quadruple sculls
Jennie Reed, Kirkland: Silver, women’s track cycling team pursuit
