London 2012 Olympics: Team USA Settles For Silver As Brazil Takes Gold Medal Game 3-1

The U.S. women's volleyball team put in a strong effort in Saturday's gold medal game, but ultimately it was not strong enough. They had to settle for silver, with Brazil taking the gold by a score of 3-1. The Pacific Northwest had two representatives in the game, Tamari Miyashiro and Courtney Thompson, both graduates of the University of Washington. It was both women's first medal in the Games. The United States won the first set, but Brazil bounced back to win the next three and take the gold. The bronze medal in the event went to Japan, who defeated Korea 3-0 earlier on Saturday.

With the contributions of the women's volleyball team and other American athletes, the United States has now collected 100 medals in the 2012 London Olympics: 42 gold, 29 silver, and 29 bronze. That's well ahead of China, who has 85, and Russia, who sits in third with 77 total medals. For an updated medal count, don't miss SI.com's medal tracker.
