There were already signs that this was coming. But in the 200 meter butterfly, where Michael Phelps hadn't lost a world championships or Olympics race since 2002, Phelps had to settle for a silver medal in the event at the 2012 London Olympics.
Phelps, who led for the first 150 meters, was caught during the final stretch by Russia's Chad le Clos to lose by .05 seconds.
A fourth place finish and two silver medals are what Phelps has to show for his efforts in this Olympics after his historic eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing made him an international superstar.
But even in the wake of his silver medal, Phelps still managed to make history as he tied the Olympic record for most career medals with 18. If Team USA medals in the 4-x-200, Phelps will sit alone atop the career medals list as the most decorated Olympic athlete of all-time.
