The United States headed to the 2012 Olympics in London with one goal in mind: win as many medals as possible. Certainly that was the goal of Michael Phelps, who was hoping to add to his all-time medal total in what figures to be his last Summer Games. Things haven't started off exceptionally well for Phelps, but the U.S. is right in the thick of things at the top of the total medals list.
China still leads in both total medals and gold medals heading into Monday, but the United States is close behind. China holds 12 total medals and six gold medals, while the U.S. has 11 total medals and three gold. Italy and Korea each have six total medals and two gold, while France is fifth with five total medals.
Eight of the United States' total medals are in swimming, which is perhaps to be expected, including two of the gold medals. The third U.S. gold came in shooting. Of China's six golds, two each are in swimming and shooting, one is in diving and one is in weightlifting.
